I have quite fancied getting involved with photography for some time and I have decided to bite the bullet and have a go. I have done some research and for starting out the 300D seems to be a reasonable candidate.

I have seen a 300D which is just over a year and a half old (no warranty unfortunately), immaculate condition, comes with all the accessories including a EFS18-50 lens. The camera in question has taken nearly 5000 pictures. Which end of the scale is this (nearly new or not worth touching) What should I be looking to pay?

Can anyone give me anymore advice?

nearly new....5000 pics is nothing. i've taken nearly 9000 with my 20d since november.

the 300d has a reported shutter life of 50,000 so i'd say you will be fine.

I had a 300d and i loved it. get that wasia firmware on it and you are laughing. price...not sure what they go for lately...check out ebay

Yeah, and you can search ebay for ended auctions to see the price the items actually went for in the end. :)

Thanks, will do :)

Are there any other essential must haves to add onto the cost? I will need a CF card (512mb seems a very good price) it comes with a leather case and strap which I forgot to mention. I really am overwhelmed by how complex SLR's are compared to my old Canon A70. What kind of things is the standard lens suitable for? Will I get reasonable results from most things minus the extremes (i.e. macro and zooming)? I don't want to have to fork out lots on lenses if I am only just starting, might not even get on with it :p

The standard lens will be fairly good for every day things, it won't give you long zoom and it won't give you super close up shots (without extensions) however for a start, its generally worth having.

Get a 1Gb compact flash card, you'll be suprised at just how many photo's you take, and on best quality (RAW file) you'll get under 150 shots even with a 1 Gb card.

EDIT: Have you looked at the Nikon D50 and kit lens. I imagine it will be in the same sort of price bracket if your looking at a used 300D. Meant to be a great starting out point.
