A few pics from last weeks FIA main event, top fuel and my favourite class, Nitro funny car..
Some seriously quick times on the day, 4.6 second pass at 320MPH was the new euro record.

All taken with the MKIII and 300MM F2.8 USM on monopod.

Drag racing is still a pretty unknown sport to most people, when you try to explain that a car on wheels with tyres has 8000BHP and does 0-100MPH in 0.8 seconds they laugh and say your full of it... Trouble is they do it all the time at Santa Pod!

Theres loads of images im putting together for my website, which is more of a cross between my love of drag racing and photography..

Seriously, photos don't do it justice, one of those things going past is 2 times louder than anything else i've ever heard, and i've been to lots of airshows lol....

Indeed! The heat haze on the first pic is cracking. :)

Shot #4 looks a little oversharpened to me, the Lucas on the side looks jaggy (couldn't let you get away without some contrustive feedback :p)

in all honesty I havn't sharpened them at all, they're only cropped and resized.. I know what you mean tho.

Its a different kind of loud, to be fair... I wear a pair of Peltor optime 3 ear defenders, which are rated for aviation use... and it a top fuel car going past physically hurts my head with them on lol..
 
yeah it is due to the resizing, just looked at the full size crop and its fine, don't feel like posting 50MB tiffs on a forum tho lol. :D
 
Cool stuff, you've certainly captured the feel of it! The only wrong one is the last, the composition is totally wrong, my eye can't find anything to look at! Was is a compromised crop?

Thanks for the comments..

The last one is a lot of peoples favourites, its really for engine/top fuel fans who know what they're looking at, simply because of the close-up nature of the engine/header flames.. Its not a stunning shot I know, it was more an effort to just show the closeup of the rear end and engine whilst under power.

lol - yes I wear ear defenders... it still hurts like hell though hehe... The funniest thing is everytime a nitro car does a full pass in the echo and rumble all you can hear is car alarms in the background.
 
Nice shots. Also, and I hate to say this, but ARE YOU MADE OF MONEY?!

I just thought, oo 300mm lens, that'd be a great addition to my collection (of pitiful lenses compared to yours!). I just saw the price of it and nearly died on the spot!

Just noticed, you're missing a wide angle L :P

lol :D

24-105 is wide enough for walking around racing paddocks and getting photos of various things :)
In terms of the 300mm don't ever ever attach one to your camera as you will buy one instantly.. its regarded as the best lens canon make the sharpest and fastest focussing, it zips through its entire focussing range in about 1/4 of a second.
Nope im not made of money lol I just save up for the stuff I want lol..
