Hi all,

If this was me 2 years ago, i wouldn't have needed to post this thread, but im'm a little rusty with this kind of thing now.

Looking to sell my Astra rathert soon-ish (next month or two) and by something cheaper to run, and insure.

I've always had a thing for 306 D-Turbo's so that seems the most logical place to start, does the Xsara have an alternative?

Anyway, what do i look for and what can i expect for a budget of £1500 - £2000?

Many thanks,

Phil

Xsara alternative is the West Coast Coupe, but is poorly specified - only has electric windows, PAS and central locking.

Consider a 1.8 16v Xsara VTR instead unless you do over 15k per annum.

I'll be doing way less that that.

More looking towards the D-Turbo not only for running costs but Insurance purposes as well, idea is to have something not terrible but affordable.

I could keep the Astra, but it will just slow down the saving for a house.

Get the VTR then if you are doing way less than that, its only Group 11. It's a 16v 306 XSi in disguise with more kit and half the price.

I bought my 306 DTurbo Phase I for £1400 2 years ago now and didn't have many problems with it. But then again i didn't have it for very long. :p

I know where there is a 205 DTurbo going though *ahem*

306 D-Turbo is only group 5.

So what? The difference between Group 5 and 11 is small. You've been posting on here for years you can't still be 18 or something, so you don't need a low group car.

I found that insurance groups mean jack.

My 306 DT was group 5 and it cost me £125 p/m to insure. Then I got a 205 1.4 GT which was group 8 and it worked out to be £25 p/m cheaper!

Tell that to my insurers then :(

Whats the point in paying more than what i need to, just to have a car to run around in now & again?

Cos you'll pay £££ more for the 306 in the first place? So whats the point in paying more than you need to ;)

If its just a car to 'run around in now and again, why pay more than I need' why have you spent cash kevving up that Astra?

Its cost me next to nothing to do the Astra, under £1k including purchasing the car.

Its the running of it thats burning a hole in my pocket, something i don't need when i'm looking at moving out in the new few years.

So your saying an early 306 D-Turbo will cost more than a Xsara VTR?

Got my DTurbo a year ago for £1k. Shouldn't be hard at all to find a nice (possibly phase 2) example for your budget (though it depends if you prefer the p1 styling...)

An R plate 306 DTurbo will cost more than an R plate Xsara VTR, yes. An early 306 DTurbo will cost less, but will then cost more just keeping it running. Remember, the early ones are now pushing 13 years old.

If you get the D Turbo get ones with the GTI-6 Styling (Cyclone alloys, front splitter, sideskirts).

Check the GTI-6 Forum under other Peugeot sales/ The cars have usually been very well looked after and you can backtrack on the forum to find out if the owner had any questions about problems ;)

By the way im 23 and pay £500 fully comp (3 years no claims) with admiral on my 306 GTI-6 (2.0L 167BHP) and its an insurance group 15 or 16.

You should check the insurance on both cars and see the difference.

Noooo, its not a DTurbo, its a turbo diesel 205 ;)

I think a lot of people are confusing the vehicle spec with engine type.

Earlier 306's came with the 1.9 XUTD engine, which was later replaced with the HDi group of engines (1.4 and 2.0 examples iirc)

DTurbo is only a general specification of the car, like Ghia or LX.
