If it has a remote fob, it'll have an immobaliser...I found that one out on my XLd I got into it, turned the key and nothing. Had to faff around with the button for a bit before it'd do anything.
As for getting new keys...not sure how easy it'll be. My '94 306 cost me £60 for one key (sodding infra red keys) and I needed the old key to get them to make me a new one, as the code was inside it.
If your mate's is a Phase2 it should be radio wave, which will be cheaper, but I don't know how they will do it as he has no keys.
