Can anybody tell me the difference between the 306 xsi models (94-97 97-01), i hear that there is a 8v and 16v version, how much difference is there between them? Cheers for any help

According to parkers all of the XSI range had the same engine so no 8v / 16v.

Engines/Trims Year CC/Cyl BHP MPH 0-60 MPG IG
2.0 XSi 3d 94 1998 / 4 135 125 10.1 31 12
2.0 XSi 3d (SR) (94) 94 1998 / 4 135 125 10.1 31 12
2.0 XSi 5d 94 1998 / 4 135 125 10.1 31 12
2.0 XSi 3d (SR) (97) 97 1998 / 4 135 125 10.1 31 11
2.0 XSi 3d (AC) 97 1998 / 4 135 125 10.1 31 11
2.0 XSi 5d (SR) (94) 94 1998 / 4 135 125 10.1 31 12
2.0 XSi 5d (SR) (97) 97 1998 / 4 135 125 10.1 31 11

The XS has a 1.6 motor :

1.6 XS 3d (AC) 97 1587 / 4 90 111 13.1 38 5

I think there is a 16v XSI but its a 1.8, but a better engine than the 2.0 8v.

They are wrong. A 16v one will hit 60 in just under 8.5 The 8v one 9. You want the 16v 1.8, the better engine ;)

I thought all XSi's were 2.0l. The 135HP version is definately 16v. The 306 1.8 lump is 8v IIRC.

If you want a 306, the one to have is the GTi-6. I had an XSi 8v (125HP), and although a great car, it didn't keep up with the GTi.

Edit: added BHP figure

is the 1.8 16v engine the same one as in the GLX?
any specs other then the parkers guide ones for the 2.0?

Ahh yes - forgot about the S16. I believe that was the same basic lump as the XSi 16v, but probably with different breathing, ignition timing and fuelling. It was possible to tune an XSi 16v up to 155HP, but the 8v would only go to 135ish without serious mods.

306gti6.com has lots of info...

I know for a fact the exhaust is restrictive to keep the bhp down. Put a zorst on and it will be a lot quicker than your average vtr. Good car for quite low insurance.

all the blocks are basically the same the 155bhp s16 is the same as the gti6 bar diff cams and more modern looking inlet (S16 also has a better crank due to it being based on t16 engine and having a knife edged crank so better if you ever want to turbo one). and the diff betweens the s16/gti6 and normal 2.0litre 16v again is the head and cams. even the 8v has pretty much the same bottom end bar some oilways for the 16v head. As for performace figures peugeot do there 0-60 with 1/2 tank of petrol + a load of baggage, check 205 gti 0-60 times and realise what a joke they are :)

If you've ever driven a 306 you'll know where i'm coming from.

Yep driven two infact, and 25kish of my saxo which has similar handling characteristics as the 306's I drove except a little less comfy. Are you referring to the fact it oversteers when you lift off quite easily or the fact that its a little skittish at high speeds? Neither would make the car a "deathtrap" IMO.
