3070 to 4070S?

I went from an RTX 2070S to an RX 7800 XT.

My recent buying habits have been GTX 970, GTX 1070, RTX 2070S, notice a pattern there?
People say with 8GB cards you will run out of GPU grunt before VRam, not true, i have serval examples where that is not true and i've recorded a couple if people don't believe me, Rust 120 FPS no problem, until you get anywhere near the Scrapyard, then its 17 because the of VRam overflow.
So i was never going to buy the 3070 and the RX 6700 XT i thought was a bit 'meh' for not much less, its more like a 3060 Ti.

And then the 4070.... this was the longest time i've ever kept a card, i usually buy in the mid range but upgrade every generation, not this time.

The 7800 XT was just what i was looking for at the right money, so i bought it and..... i love it, fantastic GPU, great drivers, its never put a foot wrong, i have kicked my self a little because the 7900GRE came out a couple of weeks after i bought it and i think its a better GPU even for a bit more money, but i'm still very happy with the card, i have no qualms with going AMD again, none what so ever, Nvidia have to convince me at this point, they have to work to win me back.
Good choice. What brand RX 7800XT did you go for? Sapphire, or Asus? These GPU's are selling for about £450.00 now.

same situation, but i rather go 7900xt for 150 extra over the 4070s, plus the extra vram will help in longevity. but worth waiting to see whats coming down the line, 3070 is fine for now. even the GRE is a better buy than the 4070s imo at 500 notes.

TDP is my limiting factor.

7900xt is 300w vs 4070s being 220w.

Possibly a contender.

I run a 13600K with a light undervolt and a 3060ti on a 500w psu since Novemeber/December and it's been fine as I only upgraded from a rx 6600 due to getting a cheep 1440p monitor and needed a little more power. I mostly play older games.

I wanted a 6700XT but I didnt want to push my luck as even though the power consumption was near the same as the 3060ti the 6700XT had power spikes to 327w though what made me get a 3060ti was I was able to get a used one for just under £200 while the 6700XT was around £250ish.

This was the most recent graphics card review of a 7900 GRE on April 12 and its Furmark that gives the high powerspikes overwise gaming goes alil over 300w.

Edit: Reading though the thread Humbug mentioned and you have a 7800X3D that gives you more power budget to play around with compared to a Intel i7/i9 K cpu so either card is an option.

I have been away for a while, but appreciate the response. I am still pondering this but seems like a sensible upgrade.

Thanks.
Unless you’re desperate to upgrade now you’d be better off waiting 6 months and you’ll likely get a card closer to 4080 perf for your money.

Buying at the end of the generation is never good unless your getting a substantial discount and in reality the 4070S is only a few % faster than a 3080 which is approaching 4 years old now so won’t hold up well in the next cycle.

It's a 5800X3D. The 7900GRE may be in either a shout though as an alternative.

sensible option, the 3070 isnt exactly a slouch tbh. unless desperate or what to throw money at it, upgrading now imo isnt worth it, especially whats coming down the line
