3070 worth the extra £100-£150 vs 6700XT

After six years I'm looking to upgrade my 6600k/GTX970 rig and have most of my components selected but for the graphics card. After the initial shock to the system that the card will cost more that my entire PC cost me back in 2015, I've narrowed my choice to the 3070 or 6700XT.

From what I gather, the 3070 outperforms the 6700XT, but I can get the latter for £150 less.

Taking into account the saving, is it worth to delay the build by a couple of months to save up for the 3070, or pull the trigger on the 6700XT and game on for another 3-4 years?

Aren't FE cards as rare as hens teeth? I'm leaning more to the 6700XT, but don't want to be left with buyers remorse. TBF, I've not played any games with RT, I've not played any of the newer titles on account my current system doesn't allow me unless I have all settings down to medium at the max.

research how people are using stock alerters via telegram (how I got mine), get signed up and be ready when you get one to get through the shopping process as fast as poss. You are up against loads of people and scalpers . Maybe you can set up an account so you are already logged in to pay. Helps if you dont have a job where you can either get to your phone or a PC.

Other than that it would be 6700XT

Good luck

Thanks for the heads up. Don't know how these alerters work, do you have a link that will help me out?

If your willing to spend £900 on a 6700XT I'd go for a 3080 FE at £650
I was looking at the 6700XT for £750. It makes me cry to think how much I'm overpaying, but unless I hold out for an FE card, I won't be playing some of the games on my Steam list.

I value VRAM, so I'd go for 12GB unless you can score an FE.

As for the performance differences:
TPU has the 3070 +5% at 1080P (142% / 135%) and +8% at 1440P (162% / 150%).
https://www.techpowerup.com/review/gigabyte-radeon-rx-6600-eagle/31.html
CB has the 3070 7% faster at 1080P and 10% at 1440P:
https://www.computerbase.de/thema/g...#diagramm-performancerating-avg-fps-2560-1440
So the +15% to +20% that Woodsta888 mentioned seem a bit high.

Thanks for the info. Just thinking off the top of my head, and I'm leaning more to the 6700XT and using the money saved on also upgrading my monitor to something with 144Hrz or more

@OP you are correct with your statement that the 3070 out performs the 6700XT

If you 'want it now' go with the 6700 XT even with my apparent over optimistic uplift in performance from a 3070 that's what I'd go for as the cost difference doesn't warrant even my over optimistic values.

Check reviews for the games you regularly play or want to play, as any generalized figure will dumb down any manufacturer sponsored advantage in other games.

At the end of the day - you'd never notice or 'feel' any difference anyway - it's usually just measurable.

So even using my over optimistic perf uplift the extra £150 isn't worth it as the bang/buck would show.

If you prepared to spend £750 on a 6700XT or save for (get a 0% credit card) a £900 3070, you need to be on alerts for FE's

3070 £469
3070ti £529
3080 £649
or as your wallet was already streching to £900+ for the 3070

3080ti £1049 which is near as makes no difference to a 3090 game perf wise but 12GB ram difference.

As hangtime says - get a 6700 XT now and then sell it when you score any of those FE cards. Though there is a bit of luck involved. Plenty here have managed it.

Good luck mate.

Yeah, this seems to me the best course of action since the 6700XT should, at the current market, hold it's value if I do score any of the FR cards you listed above. And if not, at least I'll be enjoying some 2K gaming at useable framerates which is more than I can say for my current situation.

I have a 6700 XT in the house (son’s PC) and a 3070 TI FE. The 6700 XT is a fantastic bit of kit. I paid £750 in May. Stupid price but I sold a 1660 Ti and recouped about half, and it has had 6+ months of massive use. Great card. Slower in RT, but my son doesn’t play any RT games (I do!).

Why not save yourself £300 and buy a 6600 or 6600 XT and then sell it and upgrade in 18 months. You will get maybe 50% for it, so £200-250 cost to get 18 months of use, until prices stabilise.

I did consider the 6600XT or the 3060/Ti, but from my understanding those cards are geared more to 1080p gaming, whereas the 6700XT/3070 is more focussed to 2k which my future monitor purchase will be so wanted to give myself that headroom. I guess that begs the question of whether I should maybe stick with 1080p 24" monitor and go for the lower end card. But then, since I don't plan on upgrading again for at least 3-4 years until their is a major performance spike, I'll try to get the best card I can now that doesn't make me cry at night at the price for too long

I am on the PA discord with it set for FE but out and about is a no go, no data plan on my phone (im on payg and £10 lasts me months, sad I know but when my total call duration for the duration of the S7 Edge release which is about 3-4 years is less than 24 hours you dont need topping up often lol)

Which discord are you on?I'm now seeing 3070s that are now costing £50 more, so the gap is narrowing. I'm now thinking if I can hold out for an FE card. Maybe I'll see how I do on the next drop them go from there. In the meantime I can buy all the other parts for my system and see if I can borrow a 1080Ti off a friend who just upgraded to a 6700xt.

Seems they are few and far between, had to create an account on the site needed though to prepare.

Thanks, keeping an eye on FE drops. In the meantime, my friend is dropping off his 1080 (not Ti but beggars can't be choosers) on the weekend. So, I should be good for a little longer till I score an FE or prices drop (not likely). Now, to continue with upgrading the rest of the PC???
