3070ti FE - Disassembly

One of my fans on my RTX 3070ti FE got the ribbon cable damaged during cleaning, so I have ordered a new one to replace.

Does anyone have any guides that show you how to disassemble it properly to replace the fan? (its the one underneath/intake if that help).

I had a go last night and got most of the screws out but the next 4 would remove the heatsink from the chip and I wasn't sure if I had to do that to replace a fan.
I have a LL120 zip tied to it just now as a temporary fix until the new one arrives. I just want to make sure I have the right info to replace it.

Thanks

Disassembly is easy, putting it all back together again is way more difficult.

A good way is to take photos before you start and at every stage where you remove more and more screws and connectors until nothing is attached and then pull it apart.

When you remove a screw, keep it in a layout that matches where it was on the GPU.

A good magnetic tray is a good way to keep screws in a layout that will help during reassembly.

Keep the same thermal pads but do get some new thermal paste.

Then just put it all together again, following the photos in reverse.

Thanks,

I only have MX4 paste (for CPUs) handy at the moment but I read that's not good for the GPU.
What one am I best buying for replacing the paste? Or should I get the PTM7950 pads instead?

There is a point in the tear down I just need to fit the ribbon cable through a small area if I lift the board but would be easier just dismantling to avoid breaking it again.

I don't know modern thermal paste, there are so many.

Back in the day, I changed the thermal paste in my GPU with regular CPU thermal paste and it was fine. What was a bad idea was using liquid metal which ended up killing my GPU.

Try the MX4 thermal paste and see, it might be fine.

The ribbon cable removal looks kinda sketchy :D

Thanks,

I picked up a tube of Arctic MX-7 as I will redo my CPU also, but I also picked up a Grizzly ThermalChange Phase Sheet to use on the GPU as I seen those work so much better and since the GPU won't be changed after this seemed like a decent investment. Just need to see if the pads will need redone aswell.

Be careful to buy thermal pads that match the OEM ones. You can sometimes get away with random pads but typically, they have to be a certain thickness and density.

Just use the old pads, they are designed to last.

Appreciate that thanks, I done a bit of research and what I found was:

Phase-Change are great for GPU as they get hot enough to use the proper cycles, where as CPU don't always (based on model). So I will just use the MX-7 on the CPU and the Phase-Change on the GPU.

As for the thermal pads, I haven't ordered yet but I did see a guide stating they need to be 1.5mm, but as you mention if I take it apart and they look ok then I will just leave them, it was more a precaution whilst it was open.

All this effort because I decided to give the fans a clean and accidentally broke a ribbon cable when the fan tipped out (which is quite heavy) lol.

Suppose its a good learning exercise and if I plan to keep the GPU for at least another few years changing to phase-change will help 100%.

Sounds good and yes, it's a good exercise to learn how to maintain a GPU. We all damage a ribbon cable at some point and it's a pain but I'd still rather incur the cost of a new fan in that situation than have to take my PC to a repair shop at a much higher expense.

I used to put a dab of thermal past on the old pads to help keep them working when I couldn't afford new ones.

I'd love to do a watercooled GPU at some point. Not because I need to but because it looks great and it's interesting to me. I miss the old days of UV reactive parts + UV emitting fans.

Only downside is the company sending the fan are finding it hard to source a replacement.

I may have to also look into ribbon cable repair as a backup to fix the original. I have soldering equipment but micro-soldering I am not great at. Would also need some resin and cure.

I take it they don't make small ribbon cable connectors for fans lol

Ok, bad news :(

The company who was going to source the DAPC0815B2UP008 replacement fan said they don't have stock and don't see when they will next get them.
I am looking around everywhere trying to source this fan for the 3070ti Founders Edition (DAPC0815B2UP008).
I seen a few on a marketplace without the ribbon cable and that got me thinking.

Rather than re-joining the ripped one, could you just buy a generic replacement ribbon cable?

I don't know but what I do know is that you could just get a 12cm fan and cable tie it to the GPU and run the fan off a header on the motherboard.

The GPU might not like not having a fan attached but it might let you run the GPU whilst you source a less janky solution.

Thats what I have right now, I have a Corsair LL120 zip tied to the underneath running with a FanControl curve when gaming.

I just noticed something but would be great is someone could confirm. I was told the DAPC0815B2UP005(007) fan is identical to the DAPC0815B2UP008.
From pictures it does but I am worried the ribbon length might be different.

Does anyone have any information or know how to get if these would work instead?

I'm seeing a listing on ALiExp at the mo for fan model DAPC0815B2UP008 for ~£30.

Good news!

I spoke with someone yesterday and they said the official fan for the 3070ti FE is DAPC0815B2UP008. For the normal 3070 its DAPC0815B2UP007 (or what is also known as an older model as DAPC0815B2UP005).
I got him to check some sizing for the 007 to the 008 and it was pretty close.
It got delivered today and the ribbon was slightly offset about 3-5mm however if you do not glue the "slack" to the housing there is play to get it into the connector.
Put it all back together (using the Grizzly Phase-Change PTM) and tested the fans max RPM. All checked out.
Ran some benchmarks and standard gaming and the temps look fine.

So for anyone who may have this issue, although the DAPC0815B2UP007 is not 100% compatible for the 3070ti FE (and you should get the 008 if you can find it), it can definitely be used as an alternative.

Thanks for all the help, I will monitor it to make sure no surprises happen.

I also seen this one and contact the seller to confirm stock. They said they don't have the 008 only the 005, but confirmed 100% this could be used.

Can you put a pic of the cable up? They can be repaired, but it's a fiddly job.
It does look very fiddly. Maybe leave that for a rainy day when I am bored to try our a new hobby since I have the spare fan fitted now.

Good to know, will be useful for anyone in a similar bind/needing to replace the fan, as I imagine they'll only get harder to find.
