Hi folk, need advice on building a top end gaming system around a recently purchased Geforce RTX 3080 Ti.

The build is for a friend who finally got hold of the 3080 and now wants to purchase a decent system for gaming only. No mining here. :)
Currently he is gaming at 1080, but wants to buy a 4K monitor at a later date. So would be looking to purchase the rest of the build apart from the GPU and monitor.

He's a hardcore FPS gamer currently into WarZone (very competitive and FPS is everything in his world), but wants a build that can handle any game currently out now and in the near future.

I was going to suggest an AMD system around the Ryzen 5 5600X/5800X, but not so sure now? Would this be good enough? He wont be using the System for anything else, but gaming. Would also need a decent case with good air flow. I think price wise he will pay for what it takes so long as his system does not restrict the GPU performance and I know the 1080 resolution will, but he wants to purchase a 4K monitor at a later date. :)

Cheers HT

If its competitive FPS i would go for something like a 1440p 240hz or even 1080p 240hz or higher.

The higher end AMD cpu's are pretty much the top dog at the moment but does come at a price like all things. It all depends on his budget, how much is he willing or wants to spend?

A 5800x would be a good pair for the 3080ti.

There's also a few new cases just released for amazing airflow that's not overly expensive.

  • Montech AIR 100 (cheapest budget case but amazing airflow)
  • Fractal Torrent (New top dog in the airflow line up)
  • Lian Li Lancool 2

Why would he want to downgrade?

See the video above to understand the actual real world performance.

RTX 3080 Ti is a card that can easily reach 400-watt power consumption, it is very hot and loud.

The RX 6800 XT gives 4GB more VRAM, up to 16 GB and is more energy efficient, thus remains cooler and quiet.

Nothing I can do about the GPU his choice. Mainly looking at what he needs to get the best performance from it mainly the CPU, motherboard and memory.

He just wants to game though not join greenpeace.

Maybe, if it doesn't bottleneck it and you get much better performance and performance per watt with the Radeon RX 6800 XT, and 4GB more VRAM.
I was just about to say, it seems he's fixed on the gpu side so wasn't any point mentioning it. Assassins creed has always favored AMD gpu's, its no secret there.

From other less biased reviews, they're both good in certain games, you'll always get 1 that wins the others and vice versa. It's never 1 sided like that video shows, abit misleading.

Hi

Sell the RTX 3080 Ti and buy the better Radeon RX 6800 XT 16 GB.

Not a bad idea depending on where he purchased the card.

If you keep the 3080ti you need a very well setup Ryzen system. Overclocked RAM and infinity fabric to get the best from the RTX as Nvidia have some issues to address. Even at 5k the minimums suffer.

I’d go with a X570 board. A decent quality if the budget allows.

For the power supply I’d look for something Seasonic based with 16 gauge wiring. Ideally NON* modular.
