Hey guys,

My new GPU has the fan settings so that they only turn on once they hit over 50c..

CAn I use AfterBurner, make a custom fan curve, and have say to idle around 20% fan speed? Or will that conflict if the card is designed to be in a "fan off state" when idle?

Yeah it will be fine. Trying the opposite (getting the fans to stop on a card not designed for that) might well be a problem, but I see no issues with getting the fans to run at a low speed all the time.

I think the only reason all the companies started doing this is so they can market it as:

0 Db*
*in fan off mode at idle

I suppose it will technically eat into the lifespan of the card since the fans will only be rated for x number of thousands of hours operation, but those numbers are usually so high the card will be obsolete anyway before you hit them.

Cheers guys,

I will leave it on auto, i suppose its designed this way for a reason, and if idling in the 40c~ was an issue, it wouldnt be set to that.

You can do that without any issue at all, zero rpm mode is only there for silent operation because more people care about noise levels now days (nothing to do with fan longevity). I have my fans running 40% all the time so that i have stable lower temps consistently and not having the gpu quickly blast the fans to control heat.

FE cards dont "blast" the fans at all really. They just increase with speed, cant really hear it until its 50% plus and it rarely hits those speeds when gaming. (At least my 3080 doesn't).

Just leave it at stock, works pretty well.
