3080ti -> upgrade? is it worth it?

Change in mentality is needed, not a change of GPU.

Getting over the upgrade itch with tech is a huge relief.

I think another mindset that people need to get out of when considering an upgrade is that you absolutely do not need to play at ultra settings. High settings are, 95% of the time, absolutely indiscernible during gameplay (and I often can't tell the difference even when looking for it while stationary.)

I play Red Dead Redemption 2 at 4K, everything high with ultra textures and the extra graphical options at medium and get about 100 FPS.

I'm in a similar boat, and have recently wondered if I should upgrade or not for DCS in VR.
I'd echo the sentiments from most of the replies here and suggest waiting for the 5 series. I think we'll get much more for our money

i agree with this, only the 4090 is a real upgrade over last gen high/mid or high end cards. That price though, ouch
Agree. I'd want a decent leap in performance, which is really the 4090. Given the price of the 4090 I would wait (having paid 1.4k for a 3090 I'm not getting mugged again).

I'd stick with what you have definitely.

I'm on a 3090 and have no plans to upgrade until the 5 series. I'm hoping a 5070(Ti?) will have a good and more cost effective bump in performance, features, and a decent amount of Vram. If not I may pick up a used 4090 when all the mugs (like I was with the 3090) jump on the 5090. I'm not paying silly money again for a GPU, unless I come into some silly money.

I think there's going to be a queue for the £600 4090s in about 18 months time :D

People who bought in to a 3090 at £1,400 must be feeling a bit shafted. I know it was a halo card, not good value for money, etc., but even so, sellers on the MM are receiving offers under £600 for them.

I only ended up with a 6900 XT because I bought a full system off the MM for 60% of its retail cost meaning the GPU was about £600 at a time when 6800 XTs were selling for £1,000. It's the most I've ever spent on a GPU but I'm not ignorant to the state of things. I'll bite at about £800 from whichever company offers a 4K 120 card first.

It just feels like a bad time to upgrade right now, especially if you have something high end from the previous gen. AMD have said there's a problem with the 7000 series that's going to be addressed in a refresh, Nvidia's pricing is stupid and anything below the 4080 is lacking VRAM, etc. I know there's the threat of another shortage due to AI demand, but that's only really a concern if you don't have a GPU at all right now.

Absolutely. Atleast the 4090 is significantly better than the 4080. The 3090 is barely better than the 3080/3080Ti.

Hopefully I've learnt from this but I don't guatentee it!

Still rocking 3080 Ti Fe resisting the urge to splash out for 4090.... would like some more frame at 4k on my oled.

I've just made the jump from a 3080ti to a 4090 FE and its all @Jay85 's fault! Lol

Seriously though, I was planning on waiting for 50 series cards but, with increasing talk about an AI fuelled gpu shortage on the horizon, 50 series cards expected in 2025 and prices set to jump even higher. I figured I'd jump now!

I've spent weeks going back and forth between the 7900 xtx and a 4080, finally settling on the 7900 xtx liquid devil. That is, until I realised that a 4090 could be had for only £300 more.

If it's in your budget, and you want it. Just get it! It's a huge leap in performance and will last you years.

Dont think the 4090 will end up the same as the 3090, the gap between the 80 and 90 series card is pretty huge this gen compared to last gen. Unless the 5090 comes out the same again, with the same gap and same price mind you, the 4090 on used market might be quite abit more expensive.

It's always my fault

I was being a little bit facetious. I do agree with you. I'm not sure what I expect 4080s/4090s to be at. There haven't been a huge amount on the MM so far. I did see one 4080 FE go for £900 so by the time the next gen are out, maybe £600 for a 4080 and £8-900 for a 4090. Worst case scenario, for buyers, would be next gen being so expensive that 3090s stay at £600 and a used 4090 is still worth £1,200.

People buying 4090s now may end up looking wise.

It is your fault, I've blamed you to the missus and she holds you accountable

@Tediore Hopefully it is wise. Granted it is a lot of money, particularly when you add in the cost of a water block but it feels almost certain to me that within the next year or so stock will dry up and prices will shoot up. Nvidia doesn't care about us gamers anymore, their quarterly report was the highest its ever been, more than intel and AMD combined and it's all down to the AI cards. They can only order so much silicon from TSMC, it doesn't make sense to me that they'd waste any on a gaming card they can make a few hundred dollars on when they can make tens of thousands of profit on each AI card. We're nothing but an after thought to them now, if that.
