3090 is NOT a gaming card - Gamers Nexus DESTROYS the 3090

I watched both linus video's... and guess what.. they are using RTX and DLSS games. (is MS Flight Simulator RTX/DLSS though?)

Zero surprise at decent results against older hardware with RTX on. Whilst he did have negative things to say, they were almost promotion pieces.

I was really disappointed by LTT's video. Personally I've followed them for years and years... maybe I'm biased but I've not really felt a lot of biased reviews from them, but the 3090 "review"?? It almost made me want to buy one... and that's saying a LOT

*I mean the review video, not the jizzmaster 8k gaming one. However, now I think about it, that video too. nVidia feeding him lines.

everyone knows Jay is a car fan car upgrades are expensive.

If you guys think 1500 on a GPU is expensive don't ever get into upgrading cars, you'll be spending a whole lot more for mediocre gains

I feel like the difference is that a V8 isn't a V10 with 2 cylinders disabled.

*I don't really know what this means.

God I hate those moronic faces he pulls and constantly slips his words up like he didn't just do it on purpose. Moron guy

So irritating. And it's only exacerbated by his drooling over the latest and greatest component, particularly an Nvidia release.

Nvidia don't need to pay him, he's literally stroking the 3090 during the review video. The man's nursing a semi.

Hey

So, I am that "game dev student". Really. It's me.

I got two preorders through Scan, because I wanted to secure one and the other I will cancel.

In fact, I am close to my 40s, been a hospitality manager for almost 15 years and, due to COVID, I cannot find work in the UK for the life of me, especially since I am not from the UK, but I still am a UK citizen.

I am going into 3d Design / environmental artist path because I've been doing it as a hobby, I have studied more than a year heavily on this and I just want to get out of the stupid hours and life of hospitality and do what I love.

I you read the WHOLE thread, you will understand what was my logic. And since I can afford to buy a card that is clearly an affordable powerhouse that manages to be also the most performant card in gaming out there, I am more than happy to utilize it.

Now for the use: UE4 is production ready for Fully Dynamic Global Illumination, meaning Ray Tracing is utilized to the fullest. Blender is also utilized, with great amounts of VRAM used to have a smooth and fast workflow in the Viewport of both In Engine and Blender.

Lightmass baking (non dynamic lighting) also uses great ammounts of vram, along with fast CPU and RAM. The 3090 cuts the performance of lightbaking and texture sampling in more than 50% in comparison to a 2080ti, and more than 20% in comparison to a 3080. That means, I do not have to bake test my lights in a scene standing for about 20 minuutes, but less than maybe 10. Adding those tests up, it saves hours of working in engine. Thus the 3090 choice.

I feel I did not have to explain myself, however forums and the internet is a nasty place, especially when people do not know or understand reasons for people's choices.

So yes, there are 2 preorders, one will arrive first and the other I will either cancel, or sell to the price I bought it to anyone that is nice enough to ask or does not cancel people online.

My name is also Kostas. The nick in the forum should clarify the rest. :)

Enjoy your day

Fair play to you sir. You've more drive in you than most people I know, that alone will shine through to a potential employer. Good luck man, I hope nothing in this thread came across as mockery, and as someone said earlier there was no need to explain yourself.

LOL ignores Doom Eternal because it is a well optimised game and use badly optimised ones to make a comparison GJ Steve

And how many well optimised games are there? 2? 3?

Most gamers play a wealth of games, and are extremely annoyed at nvidia's marketing - because it implied 8K gaming "IS HERE". Well, it isn't for a vast, vast, vast majority of titles. How is that a bad review?

You're absolutely right, Game optimisation sucks, but it should still be included as an example. But using the term "most gamers" kinda invalidates your argument as MOST GAMERS will not touch 8k for the foreseeable future ;)

Touché, sir.

I did mean to infer that the benefits of native 8K gaming would transfer to 4K and, possibly somewhat less considering CPU bottlenecking, 1440p. :p

the performance just isn't there for me gonna rock my 2080ti for a while longer cba with all the pre orders and bot crap enjoy your new cards chaps..

Have you seen BitWits latest video? He basically just dives into the subculture that has developed over time in the 3080 + 3090 queues (separate queues!) outside Micro Centre...it is bizarre what people go through. Really worth a watch for the hilarity.

They know their stuff alright. PC gaming isn't niche anymore - there are a lot of people out there putting big money down on it. One of the reasons is that these products are hyped up to wildly irrational levels. I must admit I used to get caught up in it myself. But just look at the active preorder threads on the forum, it's madness, I can feel the stress just flicking through them. Tbh that Gamers Nexus review is a breath of fresh air amongst a throng of media that struggles to call out the intrinsic value of these products, even for commited gamers.

There is absolutely no need to own the latest gpu on day one, certainly not the way these launches are executed nowadays. And there is also no real need to pay outrageous prices to have an amazing gaming experience. I've learned the hard way over years of gaming on PCs. Whether it's hardware or the latest games, a little patience makes the whole thing far more enjoyable.

Absolutely agree. To be honest I think a lot of 3090 buyers would agree. However the lure of the best to some people is irresistible.
