I had reason to upgrade my motherboard but having done so my 3090 is no longer recognised, with the ASUS qed indicating a GPU problem. I’ve several things , differing slots and even putting the old board back in, without any joy.

in looking closely that the board though, I can see that some of the gold leaf is missing from a couple of the tips of the pci connector, just and no more than a mm or so

Though I don’t think relevant, it’s water cooled.

given with the watercooling elements it’s the best part of £1800, I hope I’ve not bricked it.

any ideas

cheers

I had this problem. You can try clearing the CMOS but i found i had to take out the battery from the mobo (while power is disconnected) for 30 seconds to get anything coming up on my screen when i went from my 980 to 1080 back in the day.

Worth a shot.

Hi thanks for the speedy reply. I don’t think it’s the MB, as it’s brand new, and actually I’ve tried the card in three different motherboard. I’m struggling though to think the tiny bit of contact missing would that much difference, if the board is correctly seated in the pcie slot. I guess I really need another gpu to be certain it’s the 3090 though

I’ve just read some more than in fact the broken connector isn’t broken at all , the two pins are designed that way.

Which mobo?
and is the bios up to date or fairly new?
and have you properly attached the power leads?easy mistake to for get them :o done this myself on a few occasions

It's certainly pointing towards the card. Have you checked the PCIe connectors at both ends if the PSU is modular.
Also try another PSU if you've got one.

I would try the already suggested removing the battery and resetting the BIOS in both you're new board and old one.

It's a new asus b500m , and the fact that it didn't work with either MB suggests its the GPU.

would resetting the bios really help. I initially had issues with dodgy ram but that 'test' was passed on both Mbs

Resetting the bios is the first thing I'd do (other than checking cables) if a GPU was not posting. To be honest it works most of the time too so definitely worth doing before going down the RMA route.

If it no longer works in the original board, then the GPU has been damaged while uninstalling/reinstalling, or while being stored on a desk/box/whatever it was stored in while you moved it.

Look for any broken resistors, capacitors on the actual card.

If you've removed the factory cooler to install a waterblock, check if the manufacturer allows this under warranty. Did you have to remove "warranty void" stickers to do so?

Not just need a bios update for the MB?
It's not working on the old board either.

It's definitely worth a try and doesn't take long.

Do the fans spin or any lights show on the card?

BTW did you check the cables (both ends) and are you are using separate cables for each connector and not daisy chaining as the 3090 is picky about power.

It happened to me with an ASUS 570x, due to a stupid setting in the Bios the graphic card would not post - the fans were working normally and the lights on the card were on but no post and the led on the MB showed a graphic card problem
In my case it was something to do with the DP port mismatch 1.2 vs 1.4 , as soon as I changed it to HDMI cable and booted the computer that way it was working fine
worth a try with an HDMI cable before the RMA

Reset the bios before doing anything. Moving to AMD was the biggest bain of my life because you don't have a backup integrated GPU for making bios changes.

No one is saying the mobo is broken, it doesn't matter how new it is, just pull the battery, wait 30 seconds, put in back in and put in your GPU before starting the first time.

If that doesn't work the next step would logically be to try and find another GPU to test with if you've tested the 3090 in 3 other motherboards and it doesn't work. Obviously you'll want to make sure you can get anything working before blaming the GPU - as I imagine returning it is going to be a couple of months wait.

Interestingly I'm now seeing both the white ( GPU) and green (boot device) lights. the green comes on faintly after 10 secs or so.

The GEForce logo comes on , and the fans spin. having both green and white lights seems odd.

i've a cheapo GPU coming tmw and some new ram. I'll report back !

I'll also flash the bios to something I know supports 5600 cpu

This is in the new MB? You didn't get fans spinning and lights when you previously tested it in the new and old MBs?
