I sold my 350D on fleebay with the intention of buying the 400D, but having thought about it and is the light of the bargains that can be had on the Canon refurb site I decided to bid for a 30D refurb.

Guess I got lucky since i won one for £600 including shipping! And it comes with a one year Canon warantee

Off to Japan in late Nov with the girlfriend for a well deserved holiday and might have to finally get an L telephoto when i'm over there

Not sure what the pricing is like for these things in Japan but there are other things to consider:

Canon bodies don't have an international warranty, only country of purchase

Manual would be in Japanese, sure you can download the PDF version but it's nice to have the pocketbook sized version in the bag

Cables, software etc would also be Japanese, bothersome rather than expensive to rectify but still a hassle.

Price would be much of a muchness, pehaps saving a wee bit in Jap, but no big amount - and as above, no warranty.

The manual // cables aren't so much of an issue, as most dealers will swop out the Japanese stuff for UK stuff if you ask nicely.

i was comparing the 400D in silver to the 30D in a shop today and the silver version is especially toy like compared to the bigger brother.

I guess i will have to used to the weight, especially when using the 24-105

Well I went to well known high street photography retailer and got myself this

Originally I went to buy D200 because my D70 broke. But for some reason they don't stock Nikon D200 anymore and they were tight lipped about it.
I know I could get it from online but I much prefer to get it from retail shop, if anything goes wrong.

Since they didn't have D200, I went for nearest spec body Canon 30D. I considered D80 but 3FPS is not good enough for me. Also I have CF cards that can go with the Canon. Only problem is now I need to get rid of my Nikon lenses.

I feel sad leaving the dark side, but also looking forward to something new.

my nikon gear is listed on MM.

Wonder why they ended a load of listings early.

I have arrived back from another forum and there were allegations that this seller maybe a Shiller...

'Shiller' is a new term for me. What an old git I am. ;)

But maybe, just maybe, some of the alleged complaints have stuck and they have closed up shop for the time being while they sort things out.

I have to say that suddenly closing up with a £1020 winning bid on a 300mm 2.8 would not be the act of a normal sane person under normal circumstances.

Unfortunately, the forum is attached to a company that could be described as a competitor with OcUK in certain areas. Sorry. :(

yes I noticed their shop seemed to have closed - I was wanting a new zoom. Can one of you also email me the thread that explains what happened?

thanks :)

Just searched on google, the first link pretty much explained it

Very interesting, this. Bought a printer off them, and would have been very happy at the price, had it not been broken. As it was a refurb, I was prepared for possible tech probelms. What I didn't expect was the fight that ensued to get my money back, including failure to reply to e-mails and changing the refund policy. Eventually I contacted Canon UK's head of CS and explained the situation and he agreed the poor service was tarnishing their reputation by association. Upshot, 12h after mailing Canon, refund in my paypal account. Shame the shop couldn't do that off it's own back.

Saw one guy who bought a £1500 lens which was also faulty. After 3 months, still fighting for his refund. At least I'd only have been down by £30!

One interesting last point; posted negative feedback due to my experiences and then was both bribed by the store with money off vouchers and approacched by a Square Trade mediator to ask me to withdraw feedback so they can keep their good +ve score. Jokers! Forwarded all the evidence I had so the mediator could see my feedback was both fair and valid and, funnily enough, the shop have still not replied to his request for a response..........

"Clunk" sounding shutter from 30D - normal

I was suprised by the clunky sounding shutter noise it makes - not as snappy sounding as my 350D - is that normal?

It actually sounds very similar to the shutter on my brothers nasty plastic D50
