For a friend.

BMW
5 door
Diesel
~300bhp
~2 years or less.
£30k outright budget - no finance/lease.

He's tested a 335d x-Drive M-sport already and is likely going to go for it - any reason why he shouldn't - or anything else to consider?

What would you be looking at?
Thanks :)

You basically have one of two cars to choose from! Don't get his requirement for a diseasel though.

Also 3 series and 5 series aren't 5 door. You'll be looking at GTs for that in which case could add a 4 GC.

The 3 isn't a 5 door (except in touring form)

The 3 that looks very much like the 4 GC is a 4 door and that's the big difference. One is a hatch, one is a saloon

Erm. Both the 3 & 5 series come in Touring form. I have had both. Anth they are both excellent.

The diesel speculation is the one thing you should probably probe him on a bit more

Again, why? The car will be new enough to still carry manufacturers warranty most likely, and assuming bought AUC could negotiate a 2nd year warranty anyway. And can then continue warranty through monthly payments after that.

14k per year is easy enough to justify getting a diesel.

What's the justification? It's not like a 300bhp diesel is hugely economical!

~40 mpg average vs ~30 mpg average. I just drove to Aberdeen and back today in my 530d and averaged 45mpg. I have had a few 50+ mpg runs too, but they are more rare. It's not exactly uneconomical is it?

Where does the op specify an estate or touring? It says five door which normally refers to a hatch.
And if you're spending 30k flat out on a car with 300 ponies then I don't see why economy is your greatest concern! He's obviously interested in performance which is more traditionally associated with petrol.

Spending thirty thousand pounds, clearly wants something performance orientated. Assuming he does average (10k) mileage, it saves him 400 quid a year. I know the BMW 6 cylinder diesels are incredibly impressive machines and it's nothing to do with warranty, but I can't wrap my head around spending 30 grand and having an issue with 400 quid extra in fuel for a better driving experience

My 245hp diesel (530d) did 50mpg on two 200 mile runs this week, fully loaded up. Not a thrilling engine but impressive still.

They are impressive engines, yes. The 5 is a different sort of application though, generally used for higher mileage and very difficult to find petrol ones second hand even if you wanted one. But if he's looking at something fun and is spending that much money then a 335i would be a better car surely
