A yellow warning light has appeared on my dash today intermittently but has remained on for the last 100 miles. It looks like a tank symbol with a lid on the top-right part of it, with wavey lines inside the tank itself. I don't have a manual for it so was wondering if anyone knows what it is? Supposed to have a 200 mile round trip tomorrow and am wondering if it's something I can top up myself?

Thanks in advance!

Check your coolant level. A 200 mile trip might not be sensible becuase unless there is some sort of fault causing low coolant level it wouldnt normally get low enough to trigger this warning.

Indeed, as Fox says, check the coolant.

However, my mums e46 318i has the same issue, BMW seem unable to find a fault yet the light comes on every other week for no apparent reason - the coolant level is fine.

Trouble is, crying Wolf & all that........

Buy yourself a £12 1l bottle of anti-freeze from halfords, or if you're made of money, a ready mixed one. Then just keep that somewhere in the car 24/7. I keep one inside the spare wheel. Always a good idea.

I keep one in each of my wheels :D

But yes, take spare and check it at regular intervals, it could have gone down slowly, or not slowly at all, I suppose!

£12 for 1 litre?????

It's £7.50 for 1.5 litres from BMW for BMW recommended coolant, you just mix 50/50 coolant/water in a jug and top up. De-ionised water is also 26p for a litre.

My coolant was low the other week but since topping it up have not noticed any loss. The dipper pops up to say "HI THERE!" now so it must have been lowly topped up by the previous owner and I just never checked when i got the car.

My bad, I believe it is 2l. It's a massive tank of the stuff.

So pretty much the same as manufacturer spec stuff then :D TBH my level was below min (low enough to not be able to see the fluid in the reserve) and about a half litre mixture of water and half litre of coolant gave me enough to get the dipper at the right level!
