Hey guys, going to my putting my trusty 318is into service as a budget track car for next year. I know Nickxx has one (or has he sold it?). Just wanting to know any good mods, good weight saving tips and will it actually be any good?

Take the interior out, refresh the suspension and get a full geo done! There is loads of sound deadening everywhere and all of it can come out if it is just a track car.

Decent pads and brake fluid and you're away!

It'll be fine, but I'd definitely be looking to change the discs, pads and fluids (not just brake, all of them).

As DRZ says, just take everything out, you don't need it!

If you do fancy more power, a 325i engine swap takes hours, and costs comparatively little (<£400).

You can, but given he asked about Nick's, I'm safely assuming E36.

E30 318iS are rare anyway, given that from new, less than 2% of the total E30 output were 318iS models.

my point was you could have answered godinmans question by saying Nicks is an E36:p

edit: or was there a refresh or facelift between 92-98?:o

quite a relevant question, then?:p

i've been in Nicks before, you don't really need more power, just sort the suspension and get some decent tyres (after stripping it ofc).

Yes, some of those points above are correct. I didn't know which era of 3 series he was talking about.

Also, I didn't know this nick bloke had an E36, and E30 318is' (is that correct grammar?) aren't so rare as to discount their existence.

Sorry guys it's an 1996 e36. Going to remove as much as I can from inside. Gonna remove the air con setup to. Anyone know the standard weight by any chance?

1240 kg 2734 lb

But then it says '("Curb weight" in the USA)', whatever that means.

Tell a lie, apparently in 1996 it was - 1350 kg 2976 lb.

Now I don't know what to believe.

Trying to decide wether to keep and strip the Clio for a track toy, or possibly swap to something else.

The 'better the devil you know' thing means I'm fairly set on keeping the Clio, especially when buying cheap old cars is a potential minefield, but its always good to keep an eye on what other people are doing.

It will be interesting to see how crankbro gets on.

Clio is certainly a very capable machine but RWD is probably more rewarding on track.

I'd personally go for some kind of kit car if I wanted a track-only weapon.

I'd take another e36 in a heartbeat, especially for stipping out and using on a track. I'd be far more inclined to get a 325/328 though.

Ill get some progress pics up once I start. Im using the 318 as ive already got the car. Id love a 325/328 but Im currently building up my Fiesta as a much more focused track/road car so I dont want to spend out huge ammounts on the BMW. Im going to spend around 500 pounds on new suspension, various bushes, brakes and then any other little bits and bobs.. If I really do enjoy the BMW I may swap a bigger engine into it, but we shall cross that bridge when we get there.
