hello,

i have an old motherboard and processor lying around, i need to work out if it is able to run a 64 bit OS. I know theres ways of doing it if it had an OS installed but at the moment itts on it own and not running anything,

Whats the best way to work out what it it before i spend time and effort inot building it and money on getting a PSU for it>

if thats the only way im going to have to clean it up, its got a load of thermal paste dried on the face as i havent used it for a year :(

No. Intel Core2Duo T2300 (2006) has 32-bit instruction set only, for example. Vista has nothing to do as there are both 32 and 64-bit revisions.

That's a Core Duo, not a Core 2 Duo though. Core Duo (Codename Yonah) was mobile only and based on the older Pentium M CPUs, whereas Core 2 was a desktop and mobile platform, and was a new system entirely (and all 64-bit).

I thought that all CPUs from 2006 onwards (e.g. Intel Core²Duo and AMD X2 3400+) were 64-bit ready to make way for the release of Windows Vista later on in that year?

First 64bit Intel chips were the very late Pentium 4's. I have a P4 3.06 HT running Windows Server 64.
