Hi,

I have been looking for any benchmarks comparing either XP or Vista in 32 / 64 variations.

Does either AMD or Intel see a larger increase runing 64 bit code?

I have been looking for articles for ages now.

Cheers!

32 bit for compatibility. There have been loads of problems with drivers for the 64 bit version, *cough*creative*cough*.

I would say go for the 64bit option,

Im running xp x64 now, where as 4 months ago i admit i couldnt,

but now with all the drivers and such coming into shape i am loving it.

I do have 4gb of ram though, so 64bit is a god send as it can address all of it.

I have had no issues with programs or drivers in recent months.

And with vista being a new os there should be plenty of drivers which will be written for it.

From what i have heard most dev's didnt write xp 64bit drivers due to the fact the new os "Vista" was on the horizon.

You have a 64bit cpu, make use of it ;)

If you want to try it out, you can download a xp 64bit trial for free from ms anyways. I dont have the link though sorry.

Not really, they just didn't bother because there was no demand - and still there isn't.

Vista is different though. If the driver devs want to get their driver WHQL certified then they are required to provide both a 32-bit and 64-bit binaries - both of which must pass the testing. So 64-bit Vista drivers should more or less be there on launch day.

I will definitely go for Vista 64 bit if I upgrade. I have been running XP 64 bit for nearly a year and have had zero problems, bar having to purchase a new wireless PCI card, as my old one didn't have any compatible drivers. I believe that Vista will have much greater 64 bit driver coverage.

The main advantages are being seen in the server market, x64 allows more memory to be addressed allowing for large performance gains in applications such as SQL server and MS Exchange.

Dont get me wrong certain x86 applications also see a boost from x64 but compatability isnt widespread yet.
