It's a brilliant tv, i've had mine for around 2 or so months now and loving it :D.

I get clear pictures on the Digital tuner and HD on my 360 looks amazing!
Good to hear.

Can get it for ~£470 - good price?

Now need to sort out the pricing for sound :(

£470 is about right but to be honest the R87 has better blacks and more connectivity and more settings for £10 more you could get the sammy....the tosh does have better SD admittedly

Which is the better TV though?

I think id prefer the Tosh as it is a bit thinner & easily wall mountable.

All round the R87 is the better set. Hands down.

To have a talk about some stuff :)

Whats the R74 like?

It's not a better set hand's down.

First of all it may be a bit better, but considering what panel you get of course.

The Tosh you don't panel lottery it up and hope to get a good one, i think they are all the same although i may be wrong.

Either way the Tosh has it's problems and so does the Sammy. It's what you like the looks of more, how easy it will be to mount if you need it and what more out of the two which appeals to you.

there is no panel lottery with toshiba

you do however have one with the R74, as the Chi Mei panel they sometimes use in the 32" set isnt S-PVA. The Samsung/ AU panel is.

the S-PVA panel has much bette viewing angles, and is a lot brighter.

thats true, i did have the spo3 panel so i got lucky fair enough.

Tosh is very vivid i'll admit but its an unnatural vividness kind of like everything has a cg twinge to it.

Fundamentally they are both great sets I suppose I'm just being a little biased.

Yes I had one, I don't have it anymore (saw the panasonic lx70 saving £150 more for it) if you want to talk about it I'm sometimes on messenger [email protected] but xbox live is probably more likely "Raven1907" or head over to AV forums I'm on there all the time as are hundreds of others, in fact just drop in to the R87/88 thread there.

I didn't state there was panel lottery with the Tosh, i was just stating i didn't know if there was different panels on the Tosh's.

But i know the the Samsung if you don't get the good panel, your not going to like it very much and have a nightmare of a time getting it replaced if they even let you.

So what LCD would you recommend?

Some have said the Tosh, some the Sammy, read on AV Forums there is an LG highly regarded too, forgotten the model though.

you wont end up endlessly polishing fingermarks of the Toshiba

I liked the look of the samsungs initially..but I noticed it picked up reflections on the frame I found distracting..and it collected fingerprints like a crime scene investigator!

went for the Tosh and couldnt be happier with it

the c3030

the SD picture from the in built digi box is superb

sky is more than adequate and I got a panasonic upscaling dvd recorder at the same time and picture is very sharp on hdmi

I find the blacks look black and the colours are vibrant and rich

as ever the only way to tell is to go and have a look at them running..

mate the blacks are not black they are grey, to get them black you suffer sever crush, in this case "grey" crush.

the colour is brilliant if inaccurate though.

SD is brilliant however some of the best sd ive seen on an lcd and trounces the samsung.

Well to me blacks look black, im not colour blind or anything. Maybe i just like my screen and maybe because i don't notice things so easily like that.

Ive lost track of what you all think if the set to get :p

Im leaning towards the Tosh, but again i hear the Sammy is the best set? Can get an R88 for £480.

Ok Here Goes.

R87/88

Good - Black Levels, Shadow Detail, Colour Accuracy, Connectivity and Settings (a lot of settings to mess about with and per input settings)

Bad - Sound, SD is a mess, Motion Handling, poor handling of interlaced inputs, no 1080p input acceptance (means it upscales to 1366x768 from 720p opposed to downscaling from 1080p)

Overall things Better than Toshiba - HD + Image Quality + Connectivity.

C3030DB

Good - Excellent SD, Colour Vibrancy, Motion Handling, Picture Processing, sound.

Bad - Innacurate Colours, Blacks, Shadow Detail.

Overall things better than Samsung - SD + Motion Handling + Sound.

There is a £10-£40 difference between the cost of the sets, it really is personal preference, if i was to get either though especially the samsung I would get an extended warranty of some kind (even house insurance will do tbh) just because they are what they are and LCD especially at the lower end of the pricing scale tends to have build quality issues its just the nature of the beast at the moment.

Hope this helps.
