320d - remaps?

Marcus; any reason why it has to be an oil burner?

Maybe he prefers diesel. I know id be going for the diesel version, the latest 320d bmw really does show up the 320i in every respect. Same thing with the 335d vs 335i argument, the petrol is nice dont get me wrong, but the 335d is better. Most modern fast diesels go quickly, without all that thrashing you need to do in a petrol.

I much prefer the diesel equivalent of most modern day cars.torque all you want.

This is true but it's a rare situation in the BMW range. The 320i is, IMHO, quite poor (Or at least it was in 2006, when I had one for 6 weeks). However..

This is certainly not the case. Both cars have fantastic engines and each has specific strengths but the 335d isn't plain better at all. You also don't need to thrash a 335i at all - infact it's the least thrashable petrol engine I've ever driven and a key reason of why I found it so appealing. It also has that noise you expect from a 'sports coupe' and doesn't sound like a muted tractor at idle, which IMHO is important from a good looking Coupe.

The key benefit of a 335d over a 335i is sadly the most boring benefit - it is more economical. Not by a huge margin, but by enough of a margin to make the 335d a more sensible choice for a high mileage driver. If you are not a high mileage driver though, the 335i is probably a better shout. It's just more enjoyable than a 6 pot diesel.

'Torque all you want' is all very well if your primary concern when buying a car is a high flywheel torque figure you can brag about on the internet. In the real world, however, torque is only half the story, revs and gearing are the other half. It's what hits the tarmac that matters.
