320gb 7200rpm Hard Drive

Can you use an SATA2 drive in an SATA machine? I'm looking to upgrade my 80gb macbook drive.

Just changing the topic briefly.

I've just put the same WD drive in a MBP.

However, now there is a slight hum from the HD area, which is only alleviated by lifting the rear of the laptop!?!?

The HD fan noise is also significantly louder unfortunately.

ANY IDEAS?

If you have run the disk diag stuff and it is clear then I would suspect more that its a loose fitting and so a reinstall of the drive could fix it. They will run hotter than the standard 5400rpm drives though so would expect the fan to come on a bit more often.

Checked disk diag, with no reported problems
Reinstalled drive a second time.
Result=exactly as before.
Fan runs ALL the time.
:(

Anyone else experienced this?

Its less than a watt more heat.

Its not that bigger deal.

I researched this quite a lot before buying my MBP, but the uncertainty about loosing my warranty means im still on the 160Gb 7200 as standard.

Also the fans on my MBP are as far as possible away from the HD, all the HD heat goes straight to the casing.

7200RPM disks IMO, are 100% worth it...

I've got the WD one in my MBP, no noticable sound or heat increase just much faster boot and file operations. Great upgrade IMHO.

Stuck the WD 320GB Scorpio Black in my MBP and it's running great, no decrease in battery life from what i can see. No massive increase in performance but having the extra space is great.

I was told that if you get asked "Who fitted this third party hard drive?" as long as you say an authorised service provider you'll be fine and yes, I've kept the card of the Genius that told me that as backup :p

Im thinking of going for the 320gb WD.

Would i be able to partition it 3 ways

100gb Mac install
100gb Windows install
100gb+ Music,Videos,Pics.

Would the 3rd partition be visible to both the mac and windows install?

Thanks
