325i sport (e30)

Its all about what people want. These are cars owned by enthusiasts that dont want something bang up to date. I love them, the looks and styling.

Great, so does one of my best friends who has a mint 325i Cabriolet. He paid £2600 for it a year ago. Hard tops are worth even less.

Paying £5k for a car like that is akin to paying say £10k for an old VW Camper. Totally irrational and becuase the car is 'with the scene' at the moment. Wait a few years for people to realise they are just BMW's and the price will reflect the car. In real terms, thats a sub £1k car.

The thing is though, they ARNT £5k cars, i have no clue where this has come from. A quick look on trader and experience of my mate banging on about E30's for years reveals lovely examples for £2000. As i say, he bought a MORE desirable cabriolet 325i in perfect condition for £2600 last year.

I said over here there going for 5k for a good one. Over here..

You drive on the left too, come over here and buy one then :) You'll make a profit overall too as seriously 2k will get you a lovely E30

Even finding one...There are none on pistonheads really. Autotrader is little hit and miss
I cant actually see one on autotrader.

So you base your appraisal on a car on how many people on a particular internet forum own one

No but you lot really killed the love of the E46 for me :p

I choose the casrs i like by what catches my eye or is fun to drive and is usally not many about and peopel want get to see them every day.
And ones that make your spine shiver

I also like the cars that look like the are for the weathly or people that by specialist cars but are really built 10+ years ago and are cheap but still have power or grace about them :)

I owned one for a year. Worst car I've ever had, just so many niggly faults, e.g.
- Electrics. Failed heated seats, dodgy indicators
- New ball joints (common fault)
- Replacement gearbox

If you have a look on the E30 forum and as the question whether other people have faults, chances are that every owner will say that have some or other problem.
The simple fact is that they're getting on now.

As a car however, well frankly they're ace. Lots of fun to drive, despite mine only producing 153hp on the rollers (from manufacturer they're meant to produce 170hp). There's also some interesting mods available including a 2.7ltr conversion using the US block.

Personally, I wouldn't touch another with a barge pole.

I am completely confused about the prices flying around in here, E30's are NOT worth anything like this money!?

Fact is, they are worth whatever people are willing to pay for them. There's about 950 odd Sports still registered in this country, the majority of them are going to be dogs. Good ones will get 5k +, but there are still the odd few that sell for less than what they could fetch. They usually sell from between £2000-5000 depending on condition. Sometimes more. I seem to recall one up for sale for near 10 grand late last year.

Many are tired now, diffs whine, gearbox's are slack. Engines tappety. Check to make sure it has all its orig spec. Its best to try and buy one that hasn't been messed around with to much, i.e horrible rear lights etc.

Rust is a major issue, rear arches, around the boot, under and around the front window, battery train. Also check in the boot where the battery sits and the other side. They can fill up with water and rust inside out. Because the sport came with the Mtech 2 kit, nearly 100% of them will be rusting underneath along the sills. Sunroofs also go. Some didnt come with sunroofs and came with aircon instead, though these are rare. Mud flaps are the devils work!

Engine wise, they are not to complicated. Check for obvious Head gasket signs, rather common. Coolant should be changed every couple of years, but most are not now. Can lead to damage. Make sure the oil light goes out quickly, as well as checking the obvious exhuast fumes. The M20 is a smooth whiry straight 6, you should be able to tell if it sounds wrong but also keep in mine the age of these things!

Performance wise, not bad. Supposed to make 170 odd BHP standard, but of course most probably wont by now. 0- 60 mid 8's. Some have been turned in to 2.7's like mine, 190bhp odd +.

Like someone has already said first you have to find one that's up for sale, and in good condition. Also check that it is a genuine sport, lots of fakes.

It should say sport on the V5, and they were ONLY ever 2 door and only a UK specification car. They all came de-chromed, had discs all round, Mtech sport suspension, Mtech steering wheel, Mtech spoiler front rear and side (styles 1 and 2 depending on age of the car) They had a 5 speed gearbox with slightly different ratios altering the 0-60. LSD with 25% lock up (I don't remember the life of these, but most have passed it- they only have a certain lock up life, and plenty have seen a lot of car park action). Black anthracite roof lining, check control system. Front fogs, headlight washers, and map reading lights.

There is more, thats just of my head. www.e30zone.co.uk is the best place to head.

I had a 320i.

Leaking boot was easily sorted.

Safe as ****

Rare, off topic but this is driving my mate nuts and you might know. Randomly when he turns the ignition on the check light will flash, and the brake light error overhead LED will be lit. The brakelights at this point stay illuminated perminently. The only workaround we have found is to simply keep turning the ignition on and off until the brakelights go out. This happens randomly when driving too so obviously has safety implications.

Any ideas? :) Its a 1988 325i Cabriolet

How do people rate the 328i sport in e36 ? The reason i dont like e36 is because its dated now and looks just like a budget bmw...But could have my arm twisted if this s14a im looking at tommorow night is crap.

And an E30 doesn't? I don't like the E36's either, dated, but I'd take one over an E30. You can get an E46 for this money..

Nop, it looks like a car thats actually someone's hobby, thats looked after and rare. You wont understand fox :o

Rare? E30's are very common around here, in various states of disrepair, as are E36's. I see no reason why a mint E30 325i Sport says 'MY HOBBY' any more than a mint E36 328i Sport does.

Thanks for the patronising tone though
