328i or 325i? [E36]

VANOS is very very reliable on the M52, failiure isn't common and even if you get a problem its likely to just be the oil seals - you can buy a recon VANOS for just £250 anyway, so its cheap and easy to fix.

What goes wrong? Loads - cooling systems are made of cheese, the engines will grenade themselves if they are Nikasil lined, the suspension will almost certainly need a refresh on whatever you buy because most people just dont bother so it wont handle at its best - so new dampers/arms/bushes/etc.

How much do suspension kit's cost?

Shouldn't most of the engines have been replaced anyway?

This is where they get pricey yes?

BMW replaced MOST of the engines under warranty/goodwill but some escaped. Some people say if they've not gone wrong now they never will but frankly I don't buy this and somebody on BMW5 comes along with a Nikasil screwed 528i every so often even now.

I dont know the specific price for suspension on the E36 but I just paid just under 100 quid each for dampers on my 530, control arms etc etc can be about 250 quid fitted from an indy. Best to ask on E36Coupe.com for more specific E36 pricing.

Keeping on top of stuff is where they get pricey. They dont break down much if at all but if you want to keep it in good shape, running just like it should and handling like the day it rolled off the production line then it'll cost money to keep it all up together.

Seems like £150-£200 for a decent coilover kit if going non standard. Less than I expected tbh.

I've read that it's the rear suspension that usually goes first. How would you tell if it had gone?

Leaking dampers, crap handling, skipping over bumps.

Why would you want coilovers on a road car like a 328i, daft idea IMHO. Do it properly with either genuine BMW M-Tech shocks or some Bilsteins.
