I currently have an Asus P5k3 deluxe motherboard with Q6600 quad core cpu, 2 gig corsair XMS3 1333mhz DDR3 650 watt PSU. I’m hoping to go 64 bit so that I can increase the amount of ram in my system. I just need to know the following:
I assume I need a new CPU which runs at 64bit, will this mother board take 64bit cpu’s?

I know I have to purchase more ram, would it be best to get 2 new sticks of 2gig (4 gig total using up 2 slots for dual channel mode) or increase my existing amount to a further 2 sticks of 1gig, therefore having all four slots used (1 stick in each), or does this affected dual channel mode?

I also have a new hard drive which I will be installing a 64bit version of vista or windows 7 on (is windows 7 better than vista)
Any advise would be much appreciated.

The Q6600 is a 64bit capable CPU so no need to change that.

Go Win 7 rather than Vista, in fact you'll probably struggle to find a new copy of Vista these days.

CPU is fine for 64, RAM is better with 2x2GB than 4x1GB. Haven't noticed much difference at all between vista and win7 tbh, not noticed any major difference in performance - only a few cosmetic changes. If you have an existing licence key for vista 32bit it will work for activating 64bit as well, you just need the install media.

That's because people wouldn't take vista if you gave it to them for free :D

It used to be a case of memory being the simplest performance boost on a pc, now it's remove vista from the pc :p

ok thanks for your responses, so to confirm my existing quad core Q6600 2.40Ghz is ok to run on 64bit windows so all i need is more ram? if that is the case i can afford more and faster ram? plus the cost of a new OS, my version of vista is OEM :(. ive just updated my bios to the current version so hiopefully no probs with the motherboard.

gone 64bit on win7 from 32XP, & wouldn't go back.
I've had no problems with old drivers or software that some were saying as an excuse not to go 64bit.
Also now running 8gig of ram & it's made huge difference in NFS undercover, wth my 4850. before I couldn't have much eye candy turned on, but now I can have a fair bit & it's running smoother
