I'm looking for a mobo for running EM simulation software so I want as much RAM as possible in it.

Are there any desktop mobos which can handle more than 16GB ie they have 6 or 8 slots.
I'd like to avoid server type boards with multiple sockets etc on grounds of cost for now.

An i7 board would give you 6 slots and a theoretical 24GB maximum if you can find 4GB DDR3 sticks.

To get anymore slots than that you'll probably be looking at fully buffered dimms and the associated server/workstation chipsets.

If you're doing simulation work wouldn't you want ECC memory in any case?

the 32GB for desktop will come up from 2010 but think it may later in 2010 as Intel i7 new mobo max is 24GB (most of Gigabtye for AM2/AM2+ are 16GB max) - the new AM3 will do the same as 16GB and 24GB or more. I wait until 2010 as Nvidia development new chipset for AM3 --- Im using AM2 with X2 6400+ (Gigabyte GA-M59SLI-S5 @ 8GB RAM)

the Server mobo can max up to 64GB that for business only with 2 CPU socket like AMD Socket F/F+ 1207 LGA

Supermicro X8SAX i7 board, supports upto 24GB 1333 ecc/non-ecc unbuffered dimms and costs around £250.00.

Cheers, Simon.

just a quick question, may sound a bit noobish, but why would you actually require that much ram? especially considering that most vendors these days say that you should only run around 4GB for optimal system performance?

He isn't going to be composing a few e-mails, or even editing photos, he'll be using specialist software possibly for emulating complex calculations etc. large amounts of RAM will benefit him greatly I would imagine :)

Even if you found a desktop board "capable" of that kinda RAM capcity I doubt it would handle it very well... even the cheaper servers boards that support upto 32gig often don't go beyond 24gig very well... to support 32gig properly your gonna have to get a decent server/workstation board.
