Looking at buying the following light front end damaged car to repair and keep as a runaround for transporting a drum kit plus general useage -

Anything to look out for in particular on this model/year/mileage?

Thanks.

Yeah my father uses a t4 transporter at the moment for transporting his drumkit and also work and running around (runs a bodyshop, running around i.e picking up wheels and tyres, different parts etc) Basically he wants to get rid of the van and wants something nice enough to take out on a run whilst still useable for work purposes.

Price will be around £1800 with parts plus a few days of time to repair.

It's hardly any damage really, light o/s front corner, bonnet, bumper, wing, headlight etc.

£1800 will be with all the parts needed for the repair.

If you want one of these why not just buy a nice one? Not as if its going to be a cheap runaround anyway, you will end up sinking loads into keeping a 10 year old 330d going.

Was orignally looking at an A4 Audi 2006 2.0 TDI S Line but it went for way over the odds at auction. Just came accross this at a local salvage place where we're going to pick up a few other cars to repair/sell and it looks like a good buy, however if the running costs are going to be that high then we will stay clear.

What about the Audi mentioned above, are they far cheaper to run? (if we can find one at a good price) What else could we consider? Needs the storage space of this type of car, reasonable running costs but "nice" enough to take out for a drive/run now and again. Diesel not a requirement, mileage wont be much, probably 5k a year. (I know, dont need a diesel with this mileage but every type of car like this we come accross so far has been diesel). Don't want to buy a straight one, would rather outlay far less and repair a cat c/d as it would cost less in depreciation overall. Once the Porsche project is finished and sold will probably look at the RS4/6's then.

Buy a Lexus if its short term, shoveling cash into BMWs only to flog them on to a knuckledragger who only cares about the M badge on the steering wheel seems like a waste of money.

Will it be a waste of money though? If we keep it for around a year and it owes us £2500 including labour, surely we shouldn't lose much/anything?

I wasn't talking about the repair cost, more the other costs you will incur running a 10 year old 330d, ie when it breaks on you 6 months later.

Ticking timebomb comes to mind.............

Surely £1800 would buy a reasonably presentable V70 that is far more likely to carry on trundling around without major expenditure, and will have significantly more space than a 330 Touring.

Worn ball joints
Rusty front wings
Noisy drop links
Broken rear springs (especially tourings)
Frayed tailgate wiring (touring)
Turbo consider replacing if it hasn't been before it lunches the engine (£750)
Fuel pump/s
Injectors (£170 each)
Air flow meter
Manifold Swirl flaps
