£350-£400 upgrade - have useable case/PSU (I think)

As I still ideally would like to get back on my old PC with a working graphics card so I can back up things properly - would the newer ATI 5830 card be compatible with the old motherboard? I know it's PCI-E, but what's backwards compatibility like on earlier PCI-E motherboards?

Thanks very much!

Dave

Its designed to be backwards compatible if it doesnt deviate from the specs. , so should be fine.

Great, thanks stulid.

Thanks for the specs guys, I'll probably come back sometime next month just to confirm my shopping basket in case prices have dropped more.

Can i ask what you are going to use to watch blu rays, the spec only includes a dvd drive ?

I think the intent was there for the spec to be capable of handling them, however at this moment I'm not going to need a blu-ray drive as I use my PS3 for that sort of thing, however seeing as the drives are only an extra £30ish, I may consider it.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-2400 3.10GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - Retail £149.99
1 x Gigabyte H67M-UD2H-B3 Intel H67 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard - (Sandybridge) ** B3 REVISION ** £84.98
1 x Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 5830 Extreme 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card **OcUK Exclusive** £76.79
1 x Samsung SH-B123L/RSBP 12x BluRay ROM DVDRW DL & RAM Lightscribe SATAII Optical Drive - Retail Black £50.39
1 x Corsair XMS3 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (CMX4GX3M2A1600C9) £39.98
Total : £402.13 (includes shipping : FREE).

Would be one option. Not the cheapest Blu-Ray drive, but it is much better (in terms of read and write speeds for BR, DVD etc).

Could get the cheaper one and squeeze in a 2500K - but that's pretty pointless when combined with H67 and a dedi graphics card.

Ofc, that's not including the £40 left over for PSU - either a CX430 or a BeQuiet L7 will be perfectly fine.
