Errm, fairly new 350D owner that has the twin lense kit (EF-S 18-55mm F/3.5 5.6II and EF 55-200mmF/4.5-5.6II USM) and the battery grip for a few weeks. Just how good are these lenses ? Are they good enough for a few yrs of learning how to use a DSLR or......?

P.s I see that a few people here appear to want the Cannon L lenses what is so special to warrant the price, is it the F/ factor to allow plenty of light?

Hi,

The Kit lense is "ok" not brilliant but "ok", once you get more adept at using your dSLR you will soon begin to see the weakness's of them...

Things like having a decent low light f/ value like f/2.8 are a great help where you really don't want to use a flash for an image, also edge of image sharpness is better on higher quality lenses, not too mention any forms of lens distortion that may oocur.

Also bear in mind that if you upgrade to a very high quality lense like the Canon EF 17-40mm L series this will also work on full frame dSLR's like the 5d etc, so if you get totally into photography and you feel the upgrade bug coming on the lense you buy today can work on the camera's of tomorrow.

I guess it's all a question of economics and worth, if you are happy with the results you are getting and don't feel the need to go the next mile in dSLR nirvana then stick with what you have got and just enjoy the pleasure (and pain) photography can bring to you...
