We got a pre-overclocked workstation delivered yesterday at work and I was just installing our CAD software and having a fiddle around as you do.

I noticed it had some stability software installed, prime95 etc and CPU-Z. I fired up CPU-Z and the CPU's name is shown as a 3570K (ES).

Is this an engineering sample? I have seen a couple of other screenshots of people CPU-Z with (ES) in the name but cant find one right now.

If it isn't, what does it mean?

I have had an E6600 ES in the past but the ES was shown in the specification in CPU-Z not the name.

Nah CPU-Z is showing 3570k and 3770ks with (ES) after them dunno why but doesnt mean you have got an engineering sample just a quirk with CPU-Z.
