I don't have to send my hard drive back, no?

"Secret" error code 0020...determined from the FAQ.

My launch day console did the same the other day. I had opened the case before to clean the lens (heavy smoker) so i couldn't send it back. I put some Arctic Silver on but that didn't help so i tried the towel trick. Its been working fine so far.

Yup just been on the phone to MS..funny how my old PS2 is still going strong after so many years and the xbox goes **** up in under 2 years!

2-3 weeks with no gaming console apart from the old paperweight(wii) :(

But then my original xbox has been fine for years too, seems reliability drops as technology improves.

Do we really need a thread every time someone gets the three red lights?

Do we really need grumpy moaners to stomp on people's theads when they choose to start a conversation in, what is afterall, a forum for discussing Games Consoles & Hardware.

The usual applies. If you have nothing constructive to contribute, then don't. The op got a very sensible number of replies and clearly people wanted to carry on discussing it.

On topic......mine is still going strong and has been keeping me amused greatly whilst I have been stuck in a hotel room on secondment. I now fully expect to see 3 red lights tonight now when I switch it on :D

Still...I have a PS3 coming in a week or two and that will suffice if it does need to go back to MicroShi*e.

A number of new technologies that I have purchased of late are often effected by one major factor. Heat. If the management of the flow of heat is messed up then the lifespan of the unit generally drops. This is at design level not end user level. I bought a TviX HD M-6500A which cost close to £300 and felt very much like a beta unit rather than a very expensive piece of kit. The problems with it's heat management have been shocking, to the point where the manufacturer recommended fitting a dummy hard drive to improve the air flow. They they issued a full recall on any units people want to return for the updated model. I say again....beta model. These design errors are usually as a result of tight deadlines that the designers and manufacturers know are never going to be realistic but the people with the purse strings dictate when they want it on the shelves. We see exactly the same in the quality of games released these days. Business controls the market not the people who have the passion for gaming or whatever end product.

My housemate's did this earlier this year. Sent it off and it was back with us repaired within the week. Though it doesn't always boot up first time now, which is a pain.

My launch day 360 did it on Friday as well. Currently sitting in a box waiting for pick up.

Still, I bought a 360 Elite on Saturday so can't complain :D

My other half bought me an Elite on Saturday, are these 'fixed' now or is the problem likely to happen with brand new Elites ?

My case had been opened as well, just for a look when it failed, initially due to graphic issues, as there was no 3 year warranty for 3RLOD at the time.

I sent it back with 3 RLOD and MS swapped it and returned it in a week.

Same happened to me today. Almost exactly two years since I got it with only the odd overheat/crash/hissy-fit since then.

I keep trying to register it online to organise a repair but every time I put in the serial number it give me "A problem occurred, and your request cannot be completed.", which has to be the least helpful error message i've seen. Anyone have experience organising a pickup online or will I just have to phone them?
Hate giving an address over the phone, always a bit of a chore.
