I have a PS3, but just now I am finding that many of titles that I anticipate playing are only on the 360. By wife thinks I should go for the elite (because its black and would match the TV and the PS3).

I wouldn't normally go for a watered down version, but my thinking is what do I need a hard disk for.

The main two games I am anticipating are:

Fable 2 and Splinter Cell Convicted, but there are other titles I would get as well most notably Halo 3.

I am conscious that Fable 2 will probably hit PC and that conviction definitely will and maybe ps3 also. Halo 3 will probably be a Windows 7 only game but I can live without it.

I personally believe as a games platform I made the wrong choice in console with the ps3 (although I tell myself that the BD drive makes the ps3 a better overall spend).

The question I would ask is is the Arcade with its little memory card a worthy contender, or I should I just come back when I have a question worth answering?!!!

I consider a HDD pretty much a necessity (map packs, replays etc in Halo 3, arcade games and demos) but the Elite consoles really do seem to be for those whose wallets are larger than their brains.

A 60GB version is due to replace the 20GB Premium version very soon. More and more features are using the Xbox 360 and obviously Microsoft think that even 20GB doesn't cut it anymore.

Note that with the newly announced ability to copy a game DVD to the hard drive, the Elite might become more useful. Especially if it is in your living room.

Has the 60GB version been announced in the UK?

Gotta admit, if I was in the market for buying a 360 (maybe in a few months), the ability to install games to the hard-drive is a major plus - especially for a living room machine. I don't see the point in turning up the volume of the tv, conversation etc to drown out noise that can be avoided, especially at night :)

Hard drive is needed for the 360, Demo's, Downloadable content, Hard drive installs, XBLA, music if you intend and will come in very usefull.

I wouldn't go for the elite, But if the obstacle does come into play and you feel that you need more than 16gb's worth of space then you can always buy the 120gb pre-owned for about £65.

I've had a 360 for months now without a HDD, just bought a 20gig one off MM (awaiting delivery). Is it just a case of plugging it in then selecting it as your primary storage device? Also, how much is a game likely to take up on the HDD?

Can't wait to get some demos on the go :)

yep thats pretty much it. Could be anything, though I'd expect 6-8Gb a game I think. Demo's tend to be around a Gb, biggest I've seen was just under 2 and the smallest a couple of hundred Mb.

Sweet, 20gig should be enough then. I rarely play more than 2 different games at a time anyway :p

Get a Pro. It isn't a lot more than an Arcade, it comes with a HD cable, you'll be able to download demos/trailers and the 3 Fable 2 Arcade games (amongst others) without having to worry about space.

PS. Buy Dead Rising when you get it and if you like the odd jrpg Lost Odyssey or (and) Blue Dragon.

Was going to get a 2nd hand arcade but am very glad I went for a premium, all downloadable contents and extras from xbox live requires HDD.

Just wondering if it's possible to fit your own HDD in the cage?

That seems pretty unanimous, the hard disk is needed and worth the money. Makes we wonder why MS even bother to do the core/arcade versions at all. Even if its aimed at tots, its far too expensive if you aren't going to use all the power feature.

I have a few months before Fable 2 come out, so I have time to decide whether to choose the Elite or Pro.

Is the elite here to stay, I thought it was originally a special edition which would be available for a short time before going from black to white and replacing the Premium/Pro.

The Arcade is perfect for people like my brother in law who won't go online with it and wants to play the latest PES and GTA IV.

I've got an Elite and it's most definately here to stay. I don't regret upgrading to one especially with the new install to hard drive feature coming this fall.
