Been plenty of threads about this lately but I think I'm screwed.

I thought when I got mine replaced at the start of this year that the X clamp problem had been fixed and mine wouldn't get the 3RROD. Switched it on an hour ago and it keeps showing the same 3 red lights :(

I think I'm in a bit of a pickle because of the high street store I got it from - its not 6 months out of gaurentee with them and if I send it back to MS theres no way I'm going to be playing my new Christmas presents on it :(

I think it would be easier if somebody just made a new thread called 'post here for advice if your 360 has died' :p

You could always buy a new one, make sure it would be a falcon chipeset (175watt power consumption written on side of box), and then sell your old one when it comes back, will cost you a bit extra but at least your have peace of mind that its got the improved cooling etc.

Wrap it in a Towel & switch it on for 20 minutes. It Has worked for others for a temporary fix. The heat build up reflows the solder ;)

Ive been thinking about it already - with the popular high street store does the warrenty get "renewed" if the machine breaks again once its been replaced? I got it in summer 06 - it broke feb this year so its been less than a year?

How long's it last for? Mine's gone today and is sat in the towels as we speak.

Quick, someone start an 'oh no my 360 didn't die' thread to redress the balance. :p
I'm about to celebrate my launch day 360's birthday with a few candles on a cake on top of it. I don't want to tempt fate at this time :p

How jovial i was with my trusty beige sidekick, happily turning discs, taking note of my every action and filling my life with dazzling graphics.

Until today, stuck a game in, played 10 mins and bam, frozen game, whacky graphics and screeching sound. Rebooted and 3 red lights.

Was a launch day one too, bah!

Btw do i find my own box, whack it in and stick that code on they sent me?

As I say Ive been told MS have ways of telling if you have done the towel trick or not. Also mine seems fine once its cooled down which I'm sure many people would say is a good thing. I however think its a bad thing because when I send it back to MS they are going to switch it on - its gonna work then they will send it back? Is that what they do if they find it to be working?

How could they possibly tell that someone has wrapped the box in 2 towels ?
Basically it will overheat the unit reflowing the solder & sort the problem out. The box is Not opened & no screws are scuffed or scratched. The result is only to flow the solder to make contact again, it would not move it in a way where it would be odvious as we are only talking tiny almost fractional amounts.

Its not that they can tell you've wrapped it in a towel - they can tell if you have deliberately overheated it. On the xbox forums a guy from the launch team replied to a towel thread and warned people that they know all about it and can tell if 360s have been overheated. You're doing something thats against the 360's warrenty and besides that its a futile attempt at a fix that will only work a couple of days at the very most.
