hmmm OK, now i seem to have intermittent power and life to my 360, however....

the display is warped (kind of). everything is readbable and viewable (ie games) but there is a swirl effect which is blurry on the background of everything

the TV is fine, everything is connected up fine - yet nothing seems to work to stop it.

can the CMP cable fail? also i have the VGA connecter, but cannot for the life of me get this to work on the TV. when plugged in i get a out of range error, but when trying to change display settings on the TV, all i get is the option of 480, 720, 1080i 1080p etc - nothing to force it to look for a VGA connection :(

is the CMP cable covered on a warranty?

Ahhh. Don't abbreviate words which have no abbreviation lol.

If you TV supports it plug in one of the RGB cables from the component cable. If the image is fine (obviously not the colour though) then I doubt it's you cable and if you sure it's not your TV is probably you're 360 on its way out.
