Hi all

I'm going to pick up an elite sometime this week and I was wondering about the data migration cable that Microsoft provide. At the moment my saved games are on my stepbrothers' Premium console - can I transfer my saves/profile across without touching his saves/profile?

This is just using the cable, and no extra stuff like the Xport 360.

Cheers :)

The cable provided by Microsoft (as I understand it) will move the entire contents of the drive from one to the other. You don't get to be specific.

Rubbish. Looks like I'll lose my saves then.

I take it I can recover my Xbox tag on my new console - my gamertag won't have an "affinity" to my stepbrothers console will it?

Surely you could still migrate everything over, then just delete his profile/stuff off of your elite - or does it 'cut and paste' the files from one drive to another, rather than making a copy?

Scort.

It does a full copy to the new drive, then erases the old one.

As far as I'm aware it copies and then deletes the original ones. So my stepbrother would be slightly miffed with me :p

Could you not use a memory card to xfer your saved games?

Yeah, I'm thinking of going down the memory stick root, but getting one second hand and then flogging it again as the prices are extortionate on them. How do you copy saves across with a memory stick? Is it a simple click on the thing you want - copy - chuck it in the elite and copy again? Cheers :)

You really don't need the official transfer lead if you have a memory unit, in fact it's probably better not to use the lead as it deletes the 20GB HD. The official lead won't copy everything i.e. Viva pinata saves.

I simply copied my saves, themes and profile to memory unit then transfered them to the 120GB HD then spent an hour downloading extra content like map packs etc.

Better than waiting 10 days for the official lead imo. :)

Dave - Just copy your saves from 20GB HD to memory unit then transfer saves to 120GB HD from memory unit, Very simple :)

Is it better to keep saves on the hard drive instead of the MU? I've always kept save games, my current gamer picture and theme, on the MU...just in case something happens, lol.

Yeah, that's what I'll probably do. Like I say, I'll keep my eye for second hand ones - the brand new ones are daylight robbery. Shame you can't just use a generic USB stick really!

Cheers everyone - hopefully picking up my Elite on Tuesday. 32" LCD comes through on Tues as well :D
