360 HD DVD drive

Who on earth will sit there and watch a movie with the 360 sounding like a vacume cleaner!

I assume that without the 360 using its drive it will be a lot quieter but who's to say the hddvd drive wont nbe just as loud

If the HD-DVD drive is anything like the Sony PS3 BR-DVD drive, it should be pretty quiet, as it will require a lot slower rotational speed to get the data off it. And the 360 is reasonably quiet when it's just 'on'. The way I listen to movies, I have it loud enough to drown out any sound anyway :p

It wont matter, nothing wrong with switching over to a second DVD9 disc half way through a 60 hour game is there?

Ahh but what about these big FMV sequences will you have to swap disks to play them you could have 4gb of FMV. :)

I know there no problem but for convenience and all in one solution would be ideal. :)

So how will this work? Via USB to 360 then HDMI from HD-DVD to TV?

have no idea at al, but i'd assume the HDDVD would plug into the 360, and you would use the existing Tv connection on the 360

Do you guys think the HD DVD drive will work if you plug it into a PC, i get the feeling it will. If so it will make a nice external HDDVD drive.

I'm pretty certain it wont.

No it won't because no one would buy the 360 if they just wanted to play hd-dvds.

Think he meant it would be nice if you could use it on a PC should the need arise, rather than buying one exclusively just to use on a PC.

I would be surprised if it did work personally, but you never know.

On a technical level, asuming its all done via USB, i cant see why it wouldnt.
However, theres likely to be some specialist firmware and/or software requirements that only the 360 has that'll prevent usage with anything but a 360.

I saw something written the other day that apparently a guy at MS had said the drive shows up as an optical drive in windows, it just wont play HD-DVDs.

I'm sure if thats the case, then someone will find a way to make it work.

Do we know yet if HD-DVD movies released in europe are going to be the correct 24fps, or will they still be 25fps like R2 DVDs are?

In the era of HD there is no technical reason not to release movies at the same speed they are in the cinema.

Very true Nismo.
Give it a month, and there will be 'patches' for windows to allow the HD-DVD addon to be used with windows as a HD-DVD drive!. :p

I never knew that, is there any visible difference or reason why 24FPS is preferable?

(thats a genuine question by the way, not going back to the old FPS arguments :p)

No visible difference at all, but there is an audible one. Also if you compare the running time of PAL movies to NTSC ones, PAL ones are shorter - because they run 4.2% faster :)

Cinema movies are 24fps exactly, and NTSC DVDs at 23.976 fps are close enough to make no difference. PAL at 4.2% faster might not seem a lot, but it is plenty enough to be noticeable if you have heard the actors or the music etc. at the correct speed before.

I believe some movies are now being shot with a special HD-24p camera so it would be nice if we got the exact same transfer for home use in Europe, and not a poor PAL conversion. It would also mean less delay in getting releases in Europe in theory.

The 'PAL speedup' issue is quite a hot topic among home cinema enthusiasts and audiophiles.
