360 noise

If it plays a DVD or game that it will always be noisy.

My 360 is very quiet when playing DVD films, noisy otherwise, doesn't bother me though, as I crank up the surround :)

360 noise is louder than a £15 dvd player I got from Safeway. Not hugely obtrustive when playing a DVD film but enough not to use it.

True, but still a LOT quieter than the 360 playing games, XBL or DVD based...

My brand new elite is very loud cd player and a loud but liveable harddrive. But I just turn up the sound when I play lol. Still its a long way from the quality of my ps3 :(

When a DVD movie is being read, the disk spins a lot slower than when playing a game.
Also remember, the data from a game DVD is constantly being read / accessed.
Hence the reason it's louder when playing games.

I'm not defending MS but I more or less the same with most makes of DVD-RW I use at work.
I can't speak for the PS3 but as far as I am aware, the current read speed for blue-ray disks is lower than it is for current dvdroms.

Even though the DVD reads slower when watching movies, it's still an unacceptable dvd player for a lot of people..the fans are too loud as well, and the dvd player is still too loud..set top players are quieter, and even my samsung dvdrw on my pc is quieter watching dvd movies, without even using nero drivespeed to slow it down. In fact it's quiet as the DVD drive buffers enough ahead without having to spin at max speed. No doubt BD movies are read slower on the PS3, but when gaming the PS3 fans are nowhere near as loud as the 360. Neither is the BD drive. The 360 noise to me is an unnacceptable compromise. And it's cooling system is rubbish. I'm glad my elite snuffed it within a week of buying it so as not to have to go through the dreaded repair process. Instead I elected for money back and moved on. Just waiting for decent games to emerge before I get a PS3.

yep i went the ps3 way i brought it just for F1 but still waiting for other stuff 2, but i can wait as long as i have said title.

the 360 was a thorn in my side due to noise for me and was repaired once which was like a stiff kick in the b***.
i only ever played for 4 hours i think.

ps it's ok to turn up the sound when your er young but im 43 and i need peace in my life :P

For me the titles are to good atm. Its why am living with the noise and prob why most. But i still don't belive people when they say they have a quite 360 and a loud ps3 :o

I've never tried playing a DVD film in my Xbox 360 so I can't comment.
However, without a game running mines quite quiet.
When a game is running I admit it is a lot louder but then I don't really hear it over the audio volume.
I agree about your Samsung DVD-RW, I use a lot in builds at work and they are one of the quietest drives around.
I'm sorry to hear that you can't cope with it, for me for the time being it's the only gaming solution but I also intend on buying a PS3 when they are at a price I can justify paying.

I'm 42 and I still like my music and games loud :p

my 360 is actually pretty quiet and for the past 4 month i would say, i've had about 20 dvd/game cases stacked on top of it which probably isnt doing the cooling of it any favours. But anyway, my pc is well louder than the 360

The 360 dash is loud compared to say a PC running a couple of quiet 120mm fans. Its loud compared to a PS3 that's been on for a few hours. However that's not a problem for a lot of people who say they think their 360 is quiet - because when they have their 360's under their tv's or in cabinets and sit back a good few feet..so the perception is the 360 is very quiet. I say to these people stick it on a desk and plug it into you PC LCD and you will see how loud the thing is. There is no such thing as a quiet 360...have had more then one as have different friends and it's the same story. If your PC is louder then fair enough, maybe noise does not bother you. However being loud may be acceptable to some people but not to me.
