in may i got an xbox 360 from a web site. its done a couple of odd things since i got it (ruined oblivion4 disc and shot it across my bedroom floor, scratched various dvds etc) so i decided to call the site i bought it from. they said yes no problem, you can have a full refund, we dont stock them anymore so if you want a repair you will have to send it back to microsoft.

so what should i do? they will give me my £150 back or i can contact microsoft to organise things regarding a replacement. can i get better for my money than sending it back? would they give me one of the newer consoles?? help is needed! thanks.

i'd get the money back and go and buy a newer (175watt chipsets) 360 somewhere else :)

then you know there is no chance oyu'll get a refurb from microsoft

hey, thanks for your replys. so if i get a refund where can i get another one for about the same price?? i know you cant say the exact name but any hints would be helpfull! i've tried googling it but cant really find any good deals so far. there are quite a few elite deals but i dont want to spend that much money.

You can get the Arcade model with Forza MotorSport 2 and Viva Pinata aswell as a wireless controller for £209.99 from a well known games site, then if you didn't want the extra stuff you could always sell it on, meaning the console cost you even less.

yeah it is from there. i've not had the ring of death yet but i'm sure its on its way.

i really dont want to spend £200 on an arcade, i've already got forza2 anyway. i want one that works as it was intended for the price i paid!!! Is there any chance microsoft will give me one of the newer ones in exchange for mine? from what i've heard they're pretty upfront about replaceing these dodgy ones??

Microsoft won't give you a new one, they'll try to fix yours. Well, what will probably happen is they'll get it in for testing, load up a game, see that it works and send it back to you. IMO they don't test them well enough to find disc problems (or they don't give a damn). I sent in a 360 that was giving disc read problems and scratching discs but they didn't replace the dvd drive in it.

The disc problems cleared up (touch wood) though a few months later after the 360 died (3 red lights) and it had the new GPU heatsink fitted, which suggests heats causes the discs to warp and hit the drive head (the speculated cause for disc scratching). Blockbuster were good enough to replace my Forza 2 disc.

Even if MS detected a fault and couldn't fix yours for some reason, they'd most likely send you a refurb not a new one.

Get a local repair firm to replace the drive, quick job shouldnt cost more than £60, thats what we do it for.

tbh i'd rather sell my left testicle than spend £60 on fixing something i purchased new less than a year ago. plus it would probably void my warranty, plus if i really wanted to i could get it fixed for free from ms (albeit a shoddy job).

heres the thing- i want a new oblivion4 disc (because it raped my last one), i want a working xb360 which wont attempt to decapitate me with an ejected spinning disc, and I want a disc drive which dosnt sound like a boeing 777 is about to land short of the runway into my back yard. Now what can I do to achieve these aims???? Please!!!!!!

its always gonna be noisy when spinning not much you can do about that, if you dont want to spend any more money I suggest you return it to MS for repair, if you want to be guaranteed a newer console then send it back for refund and buy a replacement, albeit at a small cost

In all honesty (even the most ardent fans of the 360 will admit this) the hardware side of things is hit and miss. You cannot guarantee that you will get a unit not affected by the "problems" you have listed as they are all commonish complaints on a lot of 360s.

1) The noise issue, whilst subjective, most people will admit can be an issue for others, even if not for themselves.

2) The scratching disc issue, whilst not as common as RROD etc does still occur and MS have acknowledged this (There is a disc replacement scheme, but Oblivion would be exempt as it is not published by MS studios).

3) I am not aware of this shooting discs cross *** room issue you describe, maybe that is a one off you have been unlucky with. I am sure we would have heard more scare stories by now if it was common place!!! ("360 decapitated my Son!" etc).

Return your console and hope pot luck you don't get one that has all these issues or sell your console and buy a Wii or PS3 if that floats your boat.
No-one can give you a concrete guarantee your replacement will be better (even if it is one of the newer models), But in your position it sounds like the only way to guarantee yourself a different 360 is to take the £150 refund and buy a brand spanking new one (you will have to pay a bit more on top) and buy from a high street shop (for peace of mind in the future).

The one thing that gets my goat recently is people who complain about issues on the 360 or the ps3. Both are documented extensively yet people still buy them then complain about issues that have been openly acknowledged for ages, and are discussed on this forum daily!!

(Not having a go at you, as everyone has a right to complain when they receive a bad product/service, but all it takes is a bit of research).

hey, yeah i kind of new there were issues with some of these units but i was led to believe they'd sorted them all out ages before i purchased mine. Plus you cant just say 'dont buy things that have known issues' if that were true then vauxhall would never sell another car! think i'm going to contact ms and see what they say.

I think its why MS cover the unit for 3 years against 3 red lights (most common problem) i believe the newer arcade style machines and newer hdmi premiums are better along with the elites, infact ive not heard of many elites failing?
