I've got an all in one DVD/surround sound system, it's not the best but it does it's job. How do I go about getting the sound form the 360 through it? I've tried using an optical cable I have but that didn't work although on the back of the dvd player there are the connections that the lead from the 360 will plug into, do I just plug all those leads in or is there something else?

Before anyone says, I have looked at the manual for the DVD player but it's useless and doesn't help me one bit.

When you tried optical, did you also change the setting on the 360? You should change it to Dolby 5.1 Digital.

What model number is the DVD player? I could probably tell you if I could find a spec/pics online for the player.

You will probably find the the optical connection on the DVD player is OUTPUT only, so it will therefore not be able to recieve any signal from the 360, meaning you're not going to get 5.1 Dolby Digital using that hardware.

It's an aldi special - Tevion something or other. If it can't be done it can't be done, but it would have been nice :)

Does it say anything next to the optical connection? If it is such a cheapo player, then I'd doubt it would have proper external DD decoding capabilities.

I'm probably wrong, but surely an optical on an all in one would be an input? I can't see the point of having optical out from a 5.1 system. I would have thought it would be an input to make use of the 5.1?

Paul :)

It'll depend. If you get totally crappy speakers with a DVD player that plug in directly to the player, the owner may decide to plug the DVD player into a dedicated surround sound amp, meaning they'll need some form of output. You usually get one output in systems like this I believe, but I could be wrong.

Ah, fair point mate :) . I never thought of that!
