360 UT3 Will Have Modifications

Didn't epic persuade MS to double the amount of Video memory to 512mb or something?

The 360 doesn't have 512MB of video RAM, what it does have is 512MB shared between the RAM and Video RAM that it can use it split as it wants.
Epic apparently did convince them to go for that 512MB RAM option though.

Yea my bad, wasnt sure of the technical stuff. Looks like it paid off though!

mods are usually fanmade and then uploaded by the fans arent they ?

so would the ps3 users get the "mods" through the web browser like pc users would on other games ?

i cant see how this going to work properly on any console to be honest , for example how do console users make there own ps3 and xbox360 maps/skins/games etc ?

360 version is coming it has been said from people within Epic and it's already on the 360 so to speak.

What do you mean only between Xbox players? Crossplay? Epic already said no platforms will get crossplay anyway.

My bad, oh well :-/

Well if all the 360 owners might miss out on is the UT mods then that really isn't that big a deal IMO. Still can't understand why Epic are leading with the PS3 tho?

I think Epic will get the best mods for the PC version and give the teams the ability to make a 360 version of their mod and get it published via the live marketplace. It may cost some money, but hopefully a lot of the money would go to the developers of the mod.

What about the 360 version?

Rein: To bring mods to 360, we're going to have to make some serious changes.

So you're not going to include them?

Rein: Oh, it's going to happen but 360 is a closed system so we have to work with Microsoft on that.

Can you tell me the reason why Unreal Tournament III became a timed exclusive for PlayStation3?

Rein: I just did.

The mods?

Rein: Yeah, the mods. That's what makes it sell for so long, what keeps it played years down the line. I can understand the frustration from 360 owners but it's not going to go away. Five or six months down the line, Unreal is still there. Are they going to come late to the party? Sure. But the game will still be there and that's when the best mods will start coming out too. We've had talks with Microsoft about it but I don't think they're ready for it yet. Sony's been ready. Don't forget we only announced UT was coming to 360 in... January, so it's not that big a surprise.

Thats why.. :)

and you believe that? ;)
It's from Mark Rein, Vice President of Epic Games.

Also UT3 was in development for PS3 before the 360 version as well because of Gears I reckon. That's probably why they are leading with the PS3.

No, he's lying through his teeth, the real truth is that they developed it on the PS3 first, it was soooo good, Epic went to MS, who paid them millions to make the PS3 version just look oridinary at 720p/30fps when it really was 1080p/60, just so the 360 version doesn't look too bad when it arrives.. ;)

it's true :D

it has to come out on the PS3 1st to give it time to sell and reach the same amount of profit that it would sell in 1 week on appearing on the 360.

;)

There are a few things being missed out here.

Epic's Unreal 3 engine is already being used on the Xbox 360 outside of Gears of War. There are several XBLA titles that are out/coming out that have been made using the U3 engine.

Combine the above with the XNA developer kits (that anybody can download and develop titles for the 360) and you know full well that mod's will be made for the 360, be it with or without Microsoft's backing. The important part with be when the developer/s of a mod go to Microsoft to get it released on the marketplace. Quality control, security/digitally signing code, licensing, marketing, distributing and many more things will then be considered before any potential release.

I will bet my left nut that if Microsoft were presented with a mod which had proven success on the PC and PS3, Microsoft will seriously consider getting out for Xbox 360. Disregard any potential "oh but you'll have to pay MS points to get it" arguments for now. If a mod is going mean increased sales of Unreal 3 and/or 360 units, Microsoft will definitely consider there position.

Anyway, I'm off to insure my nuts just in case :D.

Yeah the unreal engine is being used in other games, even RS:V uses it, but these are third parties. Sony have a multi level deal with Epic, involving the optimisation of the engine purely for the PS3. Plus there is aswell as UT, the Engine optimization and another project on the go between Sony and Epic. Maybe the 360 version doesn't need as much effort to optimise it, as they already have a good grasp with GoW, and that they influenced the architecture of the 360.

As for mods, by the time the mod has been established, became popular and them MS decide to test it to death, then they certify it, then distribute i, that will be a lengthy process in total.
Also it is easy to say disregard the MS points thing, but if PC users and PS3 users are downloading user created mods for free, why should MS charge, the probable 800 points, for users to d/l it?
and who gets the money/royalties?
Who owns the rights to the mod?
Will the user who made the mod need to keep it exclusive to the 360?
Will the mod need to be built on the xna then uploaded?
It will be quite an in depth process for it to go on live.

I think the mod editor will be on the disc on the PS3, and even then just transfer it through USB, or maybe upload it to a community website.

I am sure there will be mods, but it will be more of an official mod type affair.

I'm not saying you need to completely disregard the MS points situation. I'm just saying that at this moment in time, without any word from Microsoft on Unreal mod's, you can't say what will happen. As you've listed, there are soooo many variables that it's going to give somebody a headache just thinking about them.

One thing I will mention, with regards to paying for game modifications, is look at Counterstrike. The mod of all mods overtime changed from a free download to retail paid for product. Valve and Steam changed things in the mod world.
