Hi all,

I am thinking of ripping my DVD collection on to a USB harddrive so that I can watch them all through my 360 and don't have to bother changing DVDs.

Anyone know what codecs the 360 supports? I would like to compress them slightly as well to save space and I have a lot of DVDs.

I am totally new to this so I really haven't got a clue.

EDIT: Oh, I have an elite and I am not on Live so don't really download demos or vids/films. Is there anyway I can copy my ripped DVDs onto its hardrive?

is the update not available as a download from the xbox webby that you burn to disk? I thought that most of the updates ended up on there for those that didn't have a Live connection

System OS updates are available via the website yes, but unfortunately the divx update isnt available to download via the website, it has to be downloaded and activated on the xbox itself.

T.

Should have said, I have the Divx one already, conencted it to live and downloaded it, however the 360 isn't always connected.

So it would just be a case of ripping them and compressing them with DivX to a decent size/quality ratio?

Also, anyone know if its possible to get them onto the 360 HDD?

no not onto the 360s hdd only usb or dvd+-r pretty limited really

have you considered an original xbox softmodded with a nice big ide hdd and hd cable, running XBMC? my two are still my most regulary used and valued pieces of av kit, amongst all my 'HD' 'next gen' stuff

in answer to your question yes

its not possible to get them on the 360 hard drive. Playing them off a usb hard drive is simple though, I do it off my memory stick sometimes.

shame to have a spare 105gb free on the 360 hdd and not being able to use it :(

Anyway, thanks everyone. All I have to do now is figure out how to rip the DVDs and compress them :D It will either work first time or you won't see me posting again due to the fact I have put my keyboard through my monitor :D

Didn't know there was a way to play Divx movies on the xbox without stream it from a computer which is converting it on the sly with a 3rd party program.

Where abouts on lives do you get this update? Or do you just try to play the divx movie and it will ask? Must try after work :)

The 360 can play videos from USB HDD's or over he network which both work well. Is the network sharing an option?

If you have a 120GB 360 HDD it is a shame you can't use it for your own stuff. However, you might want much more space than that depending upon how many DVDs you have and what size you rip them to.

i have 2 xbox's one downstairs i dont have to do anything to play divx the one upstairs i have to connect to live to play divx which is annoying.

if you know how to stop this then im all ears.

i have tried putting the update on my memory card but no luck so far.

no you dont, just the first time you atempt to play one

why dont you justrip the DVD as WMV's? would be a lot easier :p
Half of the films I have are Blu-Ray's converted to HD WMV's, they look great and are on average 8Gig.
