Hi,

I've finally decided to take the plunge and move on from my trusty i5/GTX970.

Have pretty much decided on a Ryzen 5 3600/5700XT combo, but less sure on the rest. Gaming wise the rig will almost entirely be used for Arma 3 at the moment, but also maybe Res Evil 2, GTA5, CS Source, Battlefield etc. Otherwise some photo/video editing, office applications, but nothing too intensive.

Some bits I'd welcome thoughts on are:
  • CPU - 3600 v 3600x - doesn't seem worth the extra £?
  • GPU - 5700xt - Gigabyte version seems the best bang for buck?
  • Mobo - Worth spending the extra to get PCIe 4.0 compatibility?
Welcome any thoughts, thanks.

i'd probably pay max, an extra £10-15 for a 3600x over a 3600

GPU - 5700xt - Gigabyte version seems the best bang for buck?
no. the powercolor dual fan for £339 is the best value

Mobo - Worth spending the extra to get PCIe 4.0 compatibility?
no.

this is a crap mobo.

waste of money

With the MSI MAG Vampiric case, you'd need a motherboard with ARGB header to control the lighting for the fan, which neither the TUF B540-Plus or the Mortar or Tomahawk have. No such issues with the RGB in the case Tamzzy suggests. Just a little extra to keep in mind when choosing case/fans and motherboard.

What's the deal with AMD drivers causing issues? I'm in a similar position to Mulder - about to pull the trigger on a B450 / 3600x / 5700XT rig - but keep reading people are sending their Powercolor 5700xt back for refunds due to driver issues.

Thanks all, definitely some food for thought. Given Arma3 is CPU intensive I'm going to check out getting a 3700 system. Not entirely convinced on the PowerColor though, seems some people have had overheating and other issues. Reckon £30 or so more for the gigabyte is worth it.

Is 550w enough for this type of system? I had thought 650w minimum but maybe that's overkill.

where'd you see that?
afaik it's the msi mech and evoke (not to mention most of the asus cards) that have vram thermal issues
from what i've seen, the powercolor el-cheapo 5700xt is basically the red dragon with 90mm fans rather than 100mm fans and without the factory overclock.

nah. might want to read this: https://www.techspot.com/review/1861-rtx-2060-budget-vs-premium-graphics-card/
same logic applies
