3600 idling around 55c, high of 95c in Gears 5

Tbh I just used the paste which was already pre applied to my wraith prism and it seems to work fine.

Im assuming the paste that was pre applied didnt do too well for me as the unit slid all over the place while I was trying to fix it down. If none of this plans out then I'm not sure what else to try :D the Max i assume has pre applied paste too so i could just try that first before the Mx2 stuff i ordered

Yeah, might be an idea as then atleast you have backup paste on hand if you have any problems. Maybe have someone hold the cooler steady still while you fasten down the clips as they do take a bit of force.

Appreciate it thanks, may employ my partner to help with that then :D

I'll try stock paste, wont take much to change if I change my mind later. Hoping for better temps this evening then!

Fitted the Wraith Max and extra front fan to match the other one I had. Used the stock paste for now and if it's good enough I'll leave it be otherwise quickly swap it out.

Initial thoughts are that it seems to run a fair bit cooler under load, but idle is still wobbling between say 45 and 55. I think that's a non-issue for now, from what I gather these cpus are quite hot compared to what I may be used to?

What do you use to test everything? Prime 95 seems a bit overkill? It stayed lower for longer on there that with the stock cooler but after about 15 minutes it started creeping towards the mid to high 80s. Obviously that's not a measure of every day use.

Played witcher 3 for about half an hour, reset the highs and lows in coretemp. It seemed to stick around high 60s to low 70s but had a few spots where it climbed in to the 80s but it literally hits that as a spike and comes back down. Checked core temp log and it mostly seemed to be stable around 70s

Any thing else to try or shall i accept this? The Max is louder than the stock cooler. I may need to tweak the fan curves more in general

I generally use aida 64 for stress test as prime is a bit unrealistic and overkill. Temps still look high especially for idle, I think mine idles at 29c though that maybe because i run an all core 4.2 oc @1.325v which actually beats stock temps by around 8c and gives 100 more points in cinibench.

What to you use to check your temps? Also coretemp?

I'll try that test too, I agree Prime is a bit OTT. When is anyone ever using 100%load at all times
