Hello OcUK,

I'm looking to upgrade my system, though I don't have too much knowledge when it comes to hardware.

Budget: £365

System:

GFX: XFX ATI Radeon HD 6870 Black Edition 1024MB
CPU: AMD Phenom II X6 Six Core 1090T Black Edition 3.20GHz
MB: Asus Crosshair IV Formula AMD 890FX
Case: Coolermaster HAF X
Cooler: Corsair Hydro H70
PSU: XFX Pro 750W Core Edition Power Supply
RAM: G.Skill RipJaw 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C7 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit
HDD: Western Digital Caviar Blue 500GB SATA 6Gb/s 16MB Cache

What do I need it for?

- Web design
- Internet browsing
- Lots of gaming

I was thinking about a graphics card upgrade, and/or buying an SSD for my OS and games. Please help! :D

Would a second 6870 be superior to a single 6950/70? Also I have the XFX Black Edition version, OcUK don't stock those anymore. Would I be okay to get the regular version instead and crossfire that?

Thanks
Moose

The card with the faster clock speeds will slow down to the same level as the other 6870, thats a feature of Crossfire.

I know someone who would disagree with you about that:

He is asking why people keep saying that in crossfire if 1 card runs at a higher speed than the second it will clock down to the slower cards speed which is not true. Crossfired cards run at there own speeds and do not clock down. In sli the faster card will clock down to the speeds of the slower card.

People seem to think because sli does it so does crossfire but its not true.

Sounds like he got it the wrong way around.

What happens if the cards have different amount of speed?
For ATI cards;
One of the cards will raise/lower its clock speeds to reach the other card's speeds.
For Nvidia cards;
Well it "was" like ATI with older drivers, but with new drivers its quite different.If you use 2(or more) Nvidia cards with different clock speeds in SLI mode,none of them will change their clocks and they will perform at their default clock speed.

Q: What about the brand, clock speed and memory size ?
A: You can use diffrent brands, but always make sure to match the clock speed and memory size. It is true that if the clock speed do not match, the faster card will match the slower clocked speed card. For best performance, matching identical cards should be used.
