My new 36gb raptor isnt being detected in my old pc  the pc as an old 478 asus p4p800-x motherboard with 2 sata ports, the main os hard drive is a 80gb samsung ide drive with xp on it, i wont to use the small raptor as the xp drive if i can get it working, its doing my head in trying different things with no success

yes it shows up as a third primary drive when bios is at the default settings.. but its not detected as new hardware or anything once windows starts up, nothings there.

You are probably best off disconecting the old samsung drive, and then booting the PC from your Windows XP disk, it should find the new drive ok, there is a possibility that you may have to make a inf floppy disk for the ICH5 controller on your board, Load XP, then reconnect your old drive, and then copy your files and settings across. Alternatively you can use something like Acronis True Image to clone your drive across. I hope that this helps.

It sounds like it might not be formatted/partitioned yet so it won't show up as a usable drive.

Right click on 'My Computer', click 'Manage' then go to 'Disk Management'. Should see it there, you can format it and create a partition on it.
