Hello, posting this on behalf of my dad who is looking for a new tv for below £500.

He is adamant that it be 37", as 40 is apparently too big :p

Any help on the best tv for this money would be appreciated, and also why :)

Thanks!

*also full HD please!*

You can just about stretch to a Toshiba 37XV555DB, Why? I used to sell Tosh tellies & I can vouch for their quality & reasonable prices, Also a Tosh telly owner myself for 3 years now & no problems.

Sharp LC37X20E 37" 1080p 3xHDMI 2xScart etc

Had one for 2 months (should have waited a little longer and got it cheaper lol)

Pro's
Excellent scaling of freeview. Good colour reproduction. Lots of inputs. Superb panel (AVS IIRC) Dont listen to what some say about banding AFAIK this issue has been resolved and there is NO banding what so ever on the one I have so I assume the production fault has been fixed.
Great EPG (linux or Unix based I think) Informative\intuative menu system.
The good list is endless, oh and 1080p MKV files from the PC look the dogs dangly bits.

Cons
Well there is always one and with this its the time it takes to change between 1 channel and the next, its like it needs to think about it before it does it. You press the button on the remote wait 10 seconds and your there, not a problem more of a could be faster moment.
But if you dial the complete number in say 001 for BBC1 its there instantly, but if like me you just press the 1 that's where the wait comes in.

***REMOVED***

I must remember :D

Honestly tell him to spend a little more and get the panasonic 37 PX80 plasma, it blows the others out of the water for normal tv and film viewing, he won't be impressed by one of these LCDs if he is upgrading from an old CRT.

Pretty sure they are around the £550 mark, pop over to avforums plasma section and have a look around for deals posted.

As above the 37PX80 can be had for £549. I delivered one to my grandparents today which I sourced for them at that price.

That sharp LCD looks appealing, but I bet the 37px80 would blow it away, still. Although it is more pricy.

Not much more for a far superior screen, but it obviously depends on how far the OP can push the budget. Definately worth it, why spend soo much money on an OKish set when you can get a fantastic one for 10% more, where the PQ is definatley improved by more than 10%.

+1
Had mine for 4 months. Absolutely stonking TV. If the budget can be stretched a little its well worth the extra. :)

i have been reading of the px80 screens for about 5-6 months now. I have never heard a bad thing said against them. Can any body find any thing on the net that paints them in a negative light? I doubt it.

A paint brush + tin of white paint + paint -VE on it :D

I'm rediculously tempted by the 37px80 or perhaps the 40px80. Everyone raves about them. It's that or the 40L4000/40v4000.

Only thing concerning me is retention/burn in. Being that I'll be gaming heavily its a worry :) (not 3 hrs 5 days a week, usually an hour here or there in the week with a heavy stint at some point in the weekend.

Ah, well he's not buying until January. And I'm sure he would anyway =)

He is planning on waiting until after Christmas, do you think all prices will be going down then? Or is that a bit of a complicated question at the moment :p

I'm crossing my fingers and waiting for january. The 2% drop is also handy, though it'll hardly make a dent on the price.
