As thread title, I'm thinking of picking up a 5800x to upgrade from my 3700x, however I've recently noticed the 5800x3d is available and wondering if that would be a better option?

Resolution will be 4k 120Hz.

At 4k the graphics card will be doing the brunt of the work. 3700x more than up to the task and to get 120hz it would be the power of the g card that would get there and on a modern game that would not be easy with highest graphics .
As I said, that's not how it works. If you think the GPU pushes the frames then what do you think the CPU does?

@Joxeon I wouldn't be expecting to turn down settings too much with a 4000 series GPU.

Whats the GPU type and resolution you want to push? Either way a 5000 series is an excellent all round upgrade.

3D would be extra/great for certain games. But make sure you play those.
4000 series GPU at 4k 120Hz and will be happy to drop the Res to 2560*1440 in games that need it for the 120Hz.

Having done a bit of reading, it looks like the 3d is maybe more for higher FPS than 120 and in that case I could be better saving some cash and going for the 5800x second hand.

I've had my 3700x for 3 years and it will be going into my second system which currently has a 1300x in it, and if the 5800x gives me another couple of years then I'd be more than happy.

The 5950x with its extra cores might give me that bit more longevity so that's what's currently holding me back from making a decision. :)

I've been holding out for a second hand 5 series, but prices seem a bit nuts just now, e.g. there's a 5900x available on MM at £300 with next to no warranty when they're available retail at £30 or £40 more.

So, I'm buying today and it's a toss up between a new 5900x or 5800x3D. I'm gaming mainly at 4k 120Hz but dropping to 1440 if the game is needy in the grunt department. It feels like the 5900x with the extra cores makes more sense, particularly as it's less expensive.

Any final thoughts before I pull that trigger?
