As thread title, I'm thinking of picking up a 5800x to upgrade from my 3700x, however I've recently noticed the 5800x3d is available and wondering if that would be a better option?

Resolution will be 4k 120Hz.

atm there isnt much difference in the 5950x vs the 3d. If youre looking it at for simply gaming, then the 3d but anything else - an extra 8 cores? Its not like an 5950x is slow for gaming either.

surely gaming with a 3700x will not bottleneck a game at 4k?! I use at 3070 rtx at 1440p and cpu usage is low with gpu at 99-100%.

If you're going to be gaming at 1080p and want mega framerate then sure..

4k 120Hz, not 60Hz.

It's the Hz that pushes the CPU.
I'd assume you'll be turning down settings to hit 120hz at 4K on most modern games but then even at 1080p a 3700X should be able to hit 120hz in most games providing the GPU is good enough so should be fine hitting 120hz at 4K with relaxed settings.

Is that even possible with relaxed settings in newer games? I mean, even a 3090 Ti struggles in games like Cyberpunk at 4K.

At 4k the graphics card will be doing the brunt of the work. 3700x more than up to the task and to get 120hz it would be the power of the g card that would get there and on a modern game that would not be easy with highest graphics .
As I said, that's not how it works. If you think the GPU pushes the frames then what do you think the CPU does?

@Joxeon I wouldn't be expecting to turn down settings too much with a 4000 series GPU.

Whats the GPU type and resolution you want to push? Either way a 5000 series is an excellent all round upgrade.

3D would be extra/great for certain games. But make sure you play those.

4000 series GPU at 4k 120Hz and will be happy to drop the Res to 2560*1440 in games that need it for the 120Hz.

Having done a bit of reading, it looks like the 3d is maybe more for higher FPS than 120 and in that case I could be better saving some cash and going for the 5800x second hand.

I've had my 3700x for 3 years and it will be going into my second system which currently has a 1300x in it, and if the 5800x gives me another couple of years then I'd be more than happy.

The 5950x with its extra cores might give me that bit more longevity so that's what's currently holding me back from making a decision. :)

I sold my 5900X and bought a 5800X3D, so the change only cost me ~£125. I'm a gamer, someone else can appreciate the cores! The 5900X was sold to me at the time as the fastest gaming CPU, and now the 5800X3D is being sold as this. It's a bit of a hobby, so I gave it a go. As far as I'm concerned MSFS is smoother, other games consistently hit my 1440p monitors 165 Hz limit, that didn't before. I've noticed a difference in HLL for example, no stutter when strings of artillery fall. Was it worth it, probably not but, but I'm not upgrading for years now.
