3700x vs 3800x which to get ? advice

I've been considering upgrading my 1700x to something newer, my board supports upto the ryzen 3000, so I thought that would be the best option and upgrade everything in a few years and chose to go for the 3700x as it the similar to what I have.

My question is which should I go for 3700x or the 3800x and why ?
looking at pricing they are not too far apart.
what is confusing me is the TDM and clock speed im likely over looking other things.

Ryzen 3700x
Base Clock 3.6GHz
Max Boost Clock Up to 4.4GHz
Default TDP / TDP 65W

Ryzen 3800x
Base Clock 3.9GHz
Max Boost Clock Up to 4.5GHz
Default TDP / TDP 105W

also, I'm hoping to stick with air cooling.
 
I went with the 3800x as it is the better chip but whether it was worth it i dont know but id be looking at the 5800x now and the only downside is that you have to buy a standalone cooler

Thanks bells, How do you find it of overclocking and cooling?
I was thinking of keeping my Noctua u12s I would consider the D15 If at a good price but it's huge.

I was thinking of getting a ryzen 5000 but my motherboard is an x370 and as far as I know, it only supports upto ryzen 3000 so I thought I would stick with the 3000, I don't know if the 5000 is a huge boost but I assume is the same difference as 1000 & 2000 and I would save on not buying a new board and going for an older CPU

On a side note what happened too 4000

Ryzen 1000 to 2000 = 4-7% improvement
Ryzen 2000 to 3000 = 13-15% improvement
Ryzen 3000 to 5000 = 15-19% improvement

So looking at ~40-45% improvement core-for-core going from Ryzen 1000 to 5000

Nothing happened to Ryzen 4000. AMD screwed up their naming scheme so the jump to 5000 was to bring it back on track. Also using the number 4 isn't great, if they want to penetrate the Chinese market lol

That gives me a good idea, going by the information I would gain 20-25% going for 1000 to 3000 ?
~40-45% improvement going from Ryzen 1000 to 5000 but I assume it that would be the if I go from 1700x - 5800x (like for like) or is that the case for all the range?

Also how would it compare price v performance, I assume it would be £60-£160 difference in price for the CPU and I would still need a new motherboard (no idea on pricing) and assume I could only use it on the 5000 since AND will be launching AM5 for the 6000, would it still be worth it ?

worth depends on your use scenario ofc.
check your mobo bios, some *may* support ryzen 5000 unofficially

You need to have a GPU with the power of 3070 while also gaming at 1080p to start noticing a difference between 3000 and 5000 series.

Early Zen CPUs also had much higher latency compared to Intel, I've heard that even doing normal tasks and desktop use feels sluggish with Zen 1 chips but not sure if that's true.

Ok so it would be 1700x vs 5800 to see 40%, not the 5600x

As for the use scenario, I don't really have many real issues with my 1700x,
I do all the basics everyone would, online, office use, multimedia, some gaming & editing
gaming has been on hold as I've not found anything new I like so I've mostly been playing older games, I do some editing but nothing major that I will need a powerhouse.

How do I check unofficially bios support, on the asus site it only shows upto 3000

That's good to know, I'm way behind with RX 580 and it looks like a bad time to upgrade.
 
I had a quick search but couldn't find any solid evidence of the 5000 series working on either VI Hero or VI Extreme.

The jump from Zen 1 to Zen 2 is pretty good anyway, I went from a 1600X to a 3900X and in terms of lightly threaded workloads I saw a decent boost. For older CPU limited games frame rate was more steady too.
