Hi Chaps

I have just installed my new 3770k into my p67a gd53 to replace my 2500k.

Everything seems to be going ok. I am just running prime 95 now to check temps and that I have installed the cooler correctly.

Does this all look ok? This is Prime blend after 10 minutes:

Everything seems pretty reasonable I think? Only thing that is worrying me is that it isn't boosting to 3.9 GHZ and is only at 3.7GHZ in Prime. I had a quick blast in Rome 2 and the turbo went up to 3.8 in places. Is this wrong or just how turbo boost works?

Would you say those temps are ok for stock voltage/speeds?

Also, I am going to start overclocking it tomorrow. Are there any tips for Ivybridge over Sandybridge? I know they run hotter but what is the max temp I should be looking at under prime when overclocked?

Also what is the maximum voltage I should run under 24/7 conditions?

I don't want anything extreme, 4.4/4.5GHZ and I will be happy. Should this be doable?

Edit: Prime been going for 20 mins now and still those are the max temps as seen in pic above. In fact temps seem to be more like 57/58 max now and seem to have stabilised.

looks ok to me,you might manage 4.5ghz before high temps limit you

aim for 80-85c max core temps and anything below 1.4v cpu voltage is fine

maybe use high llc and +0.015v or +0.020v cpu offset and set cpu multi to 45x

Ok cool. I don't expect anything extreme from my set up. It is only air cooled (CNPS10X Extreme cooler, old, but surprisingly good and silent with fan set to low). I would be very happy with 4.5GHZ to be honest.

4.5ghz under a k2 cooler here, though the voltage needed to get there was high (1.34). But in stress testing it only hit the low 80's iirc using ibt. A program i darent run on the 4770k. It maxes out at 94c in p95 which isnt as severe as ibt. Same cooler/fans as used on the ib chip.

I run 4.5 with 1.25volts, not bothered with using offset though may give it a try. Temps are 70 under P95 and about 60 with games

How do you guys tend to overclock? Do you use turbo mode so the voltage will reduce when idle or just have it set at a set voltage all the time?

Any ideas why it wasn't boosting to 3.9GHZ when running Prime?

Offset for me so that it downclocks at idle,Idk why its not going to 3.9ghz,all i do is set CPU multi and leave turbo ratios on auto

3.9ghz is very probably the single core boost speed. Knock off 200 mhz for all cores :)

Not a practice that's very honest but AMD do it too.

Well, as usual it appear I have lost the silicone lottery big time : / ( seriously I never get good overlclocking stuff). Wont even get into windows properly at 4.4ghz and 1.275v : /

Ouch, that sucks. My 2500k was an average clocker. My 3770k is good, on your previous thread I asked what batch number your chip is, there are some known stinkers.

Batch number is 3250C559

Overclocking has also deactivated my windows install as well : /

just use more voltage,if temps are ok

1.27v isn't bad

if it crashes badly it can upset the windows activation

Ok im in windows at 1.320v and 4.5ghz at the moment and running prime blend. Temps are hitting nearly 90 degrees though : /

What cooler is that with Jono?

As long as its stable don't worry too much about those temps, see what your max temps are under load in a game for a few hours if that the most work it will be doing.

Cooler is a Zalman CNPS10x Extreme.

Yeh at least I have something to work with now I suppose. I will now try dialling down the voltage and see where it stops being stable. To be honest I haven't got time to even check this 4.5ghz and 1.32v is properly stable but ive been running it for over an hour doing various things now and it seems at least 'fairly' stable.

I noticed in cpuz under prime95 voltage moves to 1.35v so a fairly large jump from what is set.

ooooooo I think I might have to start again!

I just realised on my initial round of overclocking I set my ram timings to what I thought were their manufacturer values (8,8,8,24) . HOWEVER I just realised that only 2 of my 4 sticks are rated at 8,8,8,24. The other two are only rated at C9 ( 9,9,9,24).

For this new straight to 4.5ghz and 1.32v test I left ram timings alone (defaulted to 11,11,11,24 :/)

Could that have been the cause of the instability rather than the CPU. What errors/problems does setting timings too low cause? Would timings set lower than they are rated cause BSOD and window errors/ not booting.

Oh also if it helps the main problem I was getting when I had the timings set to low was windows saying it couldn't load and that I needed to insert the disc for a start up repair ( missing kernel or something)
